Keeneland: Anniversary Stakes a tough BC prep

LEXINGTON, Ky. – It will be a once-in-a-lifetime race – literally. Although the $125,000 Keeneland 75th Anniversary Stakes might eventually be run every fall meet under a different name, its unveiling here Saturday carries the one-time purpose of celebrating the founding of this pastoral track on Oct. 15, 1936, while also getting some serious prep work done toward the 2011 Breeders’ Cup.

Woodbine: Perfect Shirl will skip E.P. Taylor in favor of Breeders’ Cup

Dyna Waltz is the lone American shipper among the fillies and mares entered for Sunday's Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes at Woodbine and the local contingent consists of trainer Miss Keller and Mekong Melody, both trained by Roger Attfield.

Attfield also had been pointing Perfect Shirl for the E.P. Taylor but the 4-year-old will not be participating.

“She just doesn’t handle soft turf,” said Attfield, who conditions Perfect Shirl for owner/breeder Charles Fipke.

ARCADIA, Calif.- Secret Circle the winner of the Jack Goodman Stakes at Santa Anita on Monday, will be considered for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile over 1 1/16 miles as well as the original goal of the BC Juvenile Sprint over six furlongs, trainer Bob Baffert said on Wednesday.

“I’ve got to think about stretching him out,” Baffert said. “That was pretty amazing what he did the other day.”

Keeneland: Raven Run better option for Strike the Moon than Breeders' Cup

Julian Pimentel guides Strike the Moon to her first career stakes victory in the $400,000 Charles Town Oaks.

Strike the Moon, winner of the $400,000 Charles Town Oaks last month in her most recent outing, likely will bypass the BC Filly and Mare Sprint in favor of the Grade 2, $250,000 Raven Run at Keeneland next Saturday, Oct. 22, trainer Mike Trombetta said this week from Laurel Park in Maryland.

Philadelphia region produces another star horse

Barbara D. Livingston
Union Rags and jockey Javier Castellano power home after overcoming traffic problems in upper stretch of the Champagne.

Apparently, the racing gods have decided it’s quite long enough for Philadelphia and its suburbs not to have had a serious Kentucky Derby contender. That really was Smarty Jones, Afleet Alex, and Barbaro winning five of seven Triple Crown races from 2004 to 2006, coming within two lengths of consecutive Triple Crowns.

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile better fit for Shackleford than Classic

Barbara D. Livingston
Preakness winner Shackleford, under Tammy Fox, works six furlongs in 1:14.39 over a deep, tiring track.

Though trainer Dale Romans still believes his Preakness winner Shackleford can be effective at 1 1/4 miles, he and owners Michael Lauffer and Bill Cubbedge appear to be targeting the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile rather than the Breeders’ Cup Classic for their 3-year-old.

“The Dirt Mile is probably the way to go, the way we’re leaning anyway,’’ Romans said Wednesday morning at Belmont Park, where he paid a visit to his 30-horse stable. “It just fits him better right now.’’

Breeders' Cup: Defections leave Turf without clear favorite

Shigeki Kikkawa
An ankle injury will keep Champ Pegasus out of this year's Breeders' Cup Turf.

If things keep going this way, Breeders’ Cup might be hanging posters in racing offices around the country.

Breeders' Cup: Romans may move Dullahan to dirt for Juvenile

Keeneland/Coady Photography
Dullahan wins the Breeders' Futurity on Polytrack. He would have to switch to a dirt track in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

The connections of Breeders’ Futurity winner Dullahan are currently pondering the same question those associated with 2010 Breeders’ Futurity winner J.B.’s Thunder did a year ago.

Should they run their horse back in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on dirt following a Breeders’ Futurity triumph on Keeneland’s Polytrack, a surface turf horses often handle better than traditional dirt horses?

Breeders' Cup: Mile win with improving Strong Suit would put Hannon on the board

American-bred, English-based Strong Suit scored his second straight Group 2 victory on Saturday at Newmarket, dashing away from seven rivals to post a 4 1/2-length score in the Burj Khalifa Challenge Stakes. That performance earned Strong Suit, a son of Rahy, a Racing Post Rating of 126, a career-best, and a number as high as anything Goldikova has hit during her 2011 campaign. Strong Suit, it appears, has as good a chance as anyone to end Goldikova’s three-year reign as Breeders’ Cup Mile champion when the two square off in Louisville next month.
