Breeders' Cup: Turbulent Descent looking like clear standout

Barbara D. Livingston
Turbulent Descent cruises to the finish of the Test after blowing the race open in upper stretch.

A lot can go wrong in three months – especially in racing. Mike Puype considers himself very fortunate that not only has Turbulent Descent flourished in her training toward the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint since she won her last start, the Aug. 6 Test at Saratoga, but also that the competition for his star 3-year-old filly in this upcoming seven-furlong race could have been considerably stronger than what appears to be materializing.

Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic field loses Zazu to shoulder inflammation

Shigeki Kikkawa
Zazu, with Joel Rosario up, wins the Lady's Secret, one of three Grade 1 victories for the rider on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. -- Zazu, the winner of three graded stakes this year, will not start in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic at Churchill Downs on Nov. 4 after inflammation was detected in a shoulder, trainer John Sadler said on Wednesday.

"We're going to bypass the Ladies' Classic," Sadler said. "She came out of her work a little off. We put her in the nuclear scan, and it revealed a little inflammation. The timing is lousy, but the prognosis for next year is 100 percent."

He is the regular rider of Havre de Grace, and though she is far more likely to run against males in the Classic on Nov. 5, his assignment for this race is not nailed down. Tom Keyser
Uncle Mo will be entered in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile as a "a second choice," trainer Todd Pletcher said.

Though he remains focused primarily on the Breeders’ Cup Classic, trainer Todd Pletcher said Wednesday that he would likely pre-enter Uncle Mo in the $1 million Dirt Mile as well.

“We will probably pre-enter in the Mile as a second choice,” said Pletcher, who trains Uncle Mo for Mike Repole. “I suppose just as an insurance policy. There’s no harm in pre-entering him.”

Uncle Mo came out of his five-furlong breeze in 58.42 seconds on Sunday in good order, according to Pletcher.

Force Freeze wins the Teddy Drone Stakes at Monmouth Park by four lengths.

On Nov. 5, Walder will attempt to experience an even bigger thrill, saddling a Breeders’ Cup winner of his own, when he sends out Force Freeze in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

Breeders' Cup: Regally Ready gets back on track for Turf Sprint with Nearctic win

Michael Burns
Regally Ready outfinishes Gypsy Ring and Bated Breath to win the Grade 1 Nearctic Stakes.

Regally Ready, whose four-race win streak earlier this year was capped by a score over Bridgetown and Chamberlain Bridge in the Grade 3 Twin Spires Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day, got back on track with a front-running upset of last Sunday’s Grade 1, $511,600 Nearctic Stakes at Woodbine. The Steve Asmussen-trained gelding earned a fees-paid berth to the Grade 2 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint after prevailing over 2-1 favorite Bated Breath by a neck on a yielding course.
