LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The King and the Queen of Breeders’ Cup ’11, Uncle Mo and Havre de Grace, have yet to arrive at Churchill Downs. But two of their potential rivals in this year’s Classic, To Honor and Serve and Flat Out, continued to show a fondness for the local strip when turning in two distinctly different types of  trials on a clear, crisp, and cold Sunday morning in Louisville.

Benoit & Associates
Twirling Candy is targeting the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Churchill Downs.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Twirling Candy, one of the top older horses in California this year, is out of the Breeders’ Cup with an injury and will be retired to stud at Lane’s End farm in Kentucky in 2012, trainer John Sadler said Saturday.

Twirling Candy was being pointed to the BC Dirt Mile at Churchill Downs on Nov. 5 when the injury was detected.

“It’s a slight injury,” Sadler said. “It’s not a big thing. He’ll go off to Lane’s End for his new career.”

Belmont Park: Trappe Shot impresses in work with Rattlesnake Bridge

Tom Keyser
Trappe Shot will most likely make his next start in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

ELMONT, N.Y. – On a morning when 10 potential Breeders’ Cup horses worked at Belmont Park, none looked any better than Trappe Shot, who most likely will start in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on Nov. 5 at Churchill Downs.

Though Trappe Shot has been pre-entered in both the Dirt Mile and the Sprint, McLaughlin said the Mile is the first preference. Part of his reasoning is that post position could come into play more in the Sprint than the Mile.

“We were pleased,” said trainer Donnie K. Von Hemel, who said he is “leaning toward” running Caleb’s Posse in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile as opposed to the BC Sprint. “Today, we planned on this being a pretty good work, and he obliged.”

Von Hemel said the 3-year-old colt will ship Friday to Churchill Downs in Louisville for final preparations.

Jersey Town, last year’s Grade 1 Cigar Mile winner, worked five furlongs in 1:01.74 on Friday morning over the Belmont main track. He shaded 24 seconds in his final quarter, according to Robin Smullen, assistant to trainer Barclay Tagg.

“It was a nice overall work,” Smullen said. “The track was heavy. He’s fit now, we’re just looking for maintenance works right now. We shouldn’t need another speedy work.”

Belmont Park: Awesome Feather likely to skip Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Awesome Feather will most likely make her next start in the Grade 1 Gazelle at Aqueduct on Nov. 26.

Though trainer Chad Brown hasn’t completely ruled out the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic for his undefeated champion Awesome Feather, he is more likely to wait for the Grade 1 Gazelle at Aqueduct on Nov. 26 to run the 3-year-old filly.

Awesome Feather returned from a lengthy layoff to win a seven-furlong overnight stakes race here Oct. 5 by two lengths. Brown said trying to run in the Ladies’ Classic at 1 1/8 miles off one race might be “a tall task.”
