Breeders' Cup: Shared Account still on for Filly and Mare Turf

Shared Account, a 5-year-old mare trained by Graham Motion, is still scheduled to run in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Churchill Downs on Friday, even though she was erroneously listed as scratched from the race early in the afternoon by Equibase, which collects and distributes the racing industry's data.

The scratch was corrected at 1:47 p.m. Eastern, 20 minutes after it was first announced, according to Equibase's scratch sheet for Churchill. Post time for the Filly and Mare Turf, the ninth of 10 races on Churchill's Friday card, is scheduled for 6:50 p.m. Eastern.

Breeders' Cup: O'Brien contingent stay on main track Friday, Sea Moon has easy turf breeze

Aidan O'Brien's Breeders' Cup Classic entrant So You Think canters on a muddy Churchill Downs main track Friday morning.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The fireworks from Thursday morning, when cancellation of turf training because of rain led to a showdown between overseas horsemen and Churchill  Downs personnel, gave way to a more civilized Friday, with the grass course back open and everyone making nice.

“Yesterday was yesterday, and now we must go forward,” said trainer Michael Stoute, who was at the heart of the Thursday argument because Sea Moon, his BC Turf starter, was supposed to work on grass Thursday.

Breeders' Cup: Creative Cause takes the morning off

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Creative Cause, a leading contender for the Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, did not train over a wet track at Churchill Downs Friday morning, a day after an incident in which he was kicked by a pony during training hours.

Trainer Mike Harrington said his colt was not injured by the kick, saying it only “brushed the hair” of his colt’s hock. He said the horse did not train Friday in no part because of the kick, although he did not specify why.

Breeders' Cup: Churchill surface condition expected to improve through day

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Churchill Downs's main track was rated muddy for training hours on Friday morning, but track superintendent Butch Lehr said he thought it would be "close to good" by first post time at 2 p.m. Eastern for the first of two Breeders' Cup cards here.

Lehr said Churchill Downs absorbed approximately three-quarters of an inch of rain with the storm that first began Thursday morning. Although it was cloudy Friday morning, the clouds were dissipating.

How to play the Saturday Breeders' Cup Pick Six

Here's my race-by-race rundown of Saturday's Breeders' Cup Pick 6 at Churchill Downs. I'm building my wager with TicketMaker, found exclusively on DRF.com.

Race 6: Turf Sprint (G2)

Perfect Officer (4) and Havelock (10) are pure turf/sprint specialists, and that's the type that win these races, be it the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint or a mid-level claimer. Regally Ready (8) fits in that regard, and of course Chamberlain Bridge (14) is as good as anyone, but his wide post relegates him to "B" status.

Breeders' Cup: Gio Ponti may make another start after Mile

Tom Keyser
Gio Ponti could make another start after the BC Mile in the Hong Kong Mile.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Hold off on those end-of-career encomiums focused on multiple champion Gio Ponti. That Gio Ponti will go to stud at owner Shane Ryan’s Castleton-Lyons farm for 2012 has been decided, but it is not entirely certain that Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Mile, in which Gio Ponti might be second choice behind Goldikova, will be his final start.

Breeders' Cup Clocker: Union Rags, Goldikova look ready to run big

Barbara D. Livingston
DRF clocker Mike Welsch on Goldikova: Bet against at your own risk.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – There were Breeders’ Cup towels everywhere on the racetrack Thursday at Churchill Downs, not surprising with the first of the two Cup cards little more than 24 hours away. Unfortunately, rain began falling shortly before 9:30 a.m., closing the turf course and forcing the connections of nearly a dozen Breeders’ Cup runners to call an unexpected audible most notably Sea Moon (Turf), who was scheduled to work six furlongs on the grass.

Breeders' Cup: Euros set for strong second day

Tom Keyser
Strong Suit will face Goldikova in the BC Mile.

Thursday morning’s dispute over training on wet grass – the BC Turf Tiff – set up a clash of continents.

The Euros thought they should be allowed to train on the Churchill grass course. The American track administrators said otherwise after rain fell about 9:30 Thursday morning. The first skirmish in this epic clash came on the Churchill backstretch, where some European trainers tried to force their way onto the course and were blocked by a security official, a member of the track crew, and Churchill outriders. The Battle of the Potomac had nothing on this drama.
