Gantry, riddenhby Richard Eramia, is all alone at the finish of the Smile Sprint Handicap.

MIAMI - Gantry proved he is a true six-furlong specialist while at the same time earning himself a free berth into this year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint with a surprisingly easy five-length victory over Indiano in Saturday’s $400,000 Smile Sprint Handicap at Calder.

The Grade 2 Smile was marred when Field Commission was pulled up by jockey Manoel Cruz in the run down the backstretch and vanned off after the race. Several minutes earlier, Peb Hughes was scratched on the advice of the track veterinarian after injuring himself in the starting gate.

Hovdey: Game On Dude can gain some redemption in Hollywood Gold Cup

Shigeki Kikkawa
Game On Dude had a poor outing in the Dubai World Cup but has rebounded.

“Conveniently located three miles east of the Los Angeles International Airport, Hollywood Park, formerly a thoroughbred racetrack, is the largest undeveloped parcel of land in the Greater Los Angeles area.”

– recent press release from Merit Property Management

If the land developers and their management company could just hold off with the shovels, the rest of us would like to squeeze in one more Hollywood Gold Cup on Saturday afternoon, especially since the last anyone checked Hollywood Park is not “formerly” a racetrack just yet.

Thanks for that.

When Musical Romance steps into the gate for Saturday’s Grade 1 Princess Rooney, she will do so as the starting highweight, favorite, and reigning division champion. What a difference a year makes!

The race did not live up to full expectations, however.  There were three late scratches, including Was, the English Oaks winner; Maybe, who was third in the English 1000 Guineas, and the outsider Bible Belt.

“I thought, ‘Let’s wind him up, shoot him off the turn, and see what happens,’ ” Gomez recalled.

What happened was Jeranimo’s first win in a Grade 1 race. Rallying wide through the stretch, Jeranimo ($19.60) ran past his rivals to win the turf race by 1 1/4 lengths over the highly regarded Argentine import Suggestive Boy.
