Belmont Park: Ward eager to see what Judy the Beauty can do in Gallant Bloom

Barbara D. Livingston
Judy the Beauty will make her first start since September’s Spinaway on Thursday.

ELMONT, N.Y. – To say trainer Wesley Ward is looking forward to running Judy the Beauty in Saturday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Gallant Bloom Handicap at Belmont Park would be an understatement.

“I’m so excited to run her my toes are wiggling,” Ward said Wednesday by phone from Keeneland.

Judy the Beauty, beaten a nose by Emma’s Encore in the Grade 1 Prioress at Saratoga on Aug. 4, was one of 10 fillies and mares entered for the Gallant Bloom, a Win and You’re In race for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita on Nov. 2.

Calder notes: Salamera shipping west for Chandelier

Coady Photography
After winning the J J'sdream Stakes, Salamera will be pointed toward the Grade 1 Chandelier at Santa Anita.

MIAMI – Trainer Rodolfo Garcia could have opted to keep his Grade 2-placed Salamera home for what would have been a much-anticipated matchup with the undefeated and untested Rose to Gold in last Saturday’s Brave Raj Stakes. Instead, Garcia decided to skip that spot to ship Salamera to Santa Anita for the Grade 1 Chandelier a week from Saturday.

Redeemed earned a fees-paid berth in the Breeders' Cup Marathon by winning the Greenwood Cup under Ramon Dominguez.

Redeemed, a multiple graded stakes winner this year who was being pointed to the Breeders’ Cup Marathon, and Boys At Tosconova, who won the Grade 1 Hopeful in 2010, have been retired, their owner announced on Wednesday.

Redeemed, a 4-year-old Virginia-bred son of Include, has a torn tendon in his right foreleg, owner Samantha Siegel said. Meanwhile, Boys At Tosconova simply was not training like he needed to be competitive, Siegel said.

Siegel indicated she would attempt to find homes to stand both as stallions.

Michael Burns
Wise Dan gives jockey John Velasquez his third Woodbine Mile victory by taking Sunday's race by 3 1/4 lengths.

But Wise Dan made it look fairly easy here this past Sunday, cruising to a 3 1/4-length win to give trainer Charlie Lopresti his second straight victory in the Woodbine Mile following the success last year of Turallure.
