Keeneland: Big field, no clear-cut choice in Breeders' Futurity

[bc_video_id:264551:]LEXINGTON, Ky. – Like sister, like brother. As wide open as the Darley Alcibiades shaped up for the opening-day card Friday at Keeneland, so, too, has the Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity come up a monumental head-scratcher for Saturday.

Just like the Alcibiades and its 2-year-old fillies, the Futurity was carded with a field of 14 2-year-old colts, along with two also-eligibles. The Futurity, which also is run at 1 1/16 miles on Polytrack, is a Win and You’re In race toward the Nov. 3 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita.

Santa Anita: Scherer Magic gets blinkers for Tim Conway Stakes

Benoit & Associates
Scherer Magic will try to bounce back in Saturday's Tim Conway Stakes.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Although summer was a bust for Scherer Magic, autumn still holds promise for the 2-year-old sprinter.

A return to form in the $100,000 Tim Conway Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita would re-establish Scherer Magic as a leading candidate for a $500,000 Breeders’ Cup race Nov. 2 on the same track, at the same six-furlong distance.

“We’re looking at the Juvenile Sprint,” trainer John Sadler said, which might have seemed ambitious after an even-money debacle in August at Del Mar.

Calder: Musical Romance using Mike Sherman as her Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint prep

Coady Photography
Trainer Bill Kaplan says the timing of the Mike Sherman is perfect for Musical Romance, who would have four weeks to the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

MIAMI – Saturday’s $55,000 Mike Sherman Memorial Stakes was surely not designed as a Breeders’ Cup prep, but it could end up becoming just that for defending BC Filly and Mare Sprint champ Musical Romance, who is among the 10 females entered to go 6 1/2 furlongs in the overnight dash.

The Mike Sherman shares top billing on Saturday’s 12-race program at Calder with the $75,000 Kenny Noe Jr. Handicap, a 6 1/2-furlong race for 3-year-olds and up. The two races do have one common denominator – the speedy filly Spectacular Sky, who was entered in both events by trainer Marty Wolfson.

Keeneland: Wise Dan brings exceptional speed and talent to Shadwell Turf Mile

Michael Burns
Wise Dan enters the Shadwell Turf Mile with a string of five triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The accolade “freak” is overused in racing, as any first-time starter winning by open lengths might be labeled as such.

Weekend Warrior for Oct. 6, 2012: Tizracer should handle switch to Polytrack in Breeders' Futurity

[bc_video_id:264495:]It seems that no matter which way you go Saturday, you can’t help but bump into a rich stakes event loaded with Breeders’ Cup implications. From the trio of Grade 1 events at Keeneland (plus two other graded stakes), to the trio of Grade 1 races at Belmont Park, to the Grade 1, $250,000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship backed by the Grade 2, $150,000 Arroyo Seco Mile, to the Grade 2, $500,000 Indiana Derby at Hoosier Park, and to the Grade 2, $500,000 Hawthorne Gold Cup, Saturday is just wall-to-wall serious stakes madness.

Breeders' Cup Sprint: The Lumber Guy a likely starter after Vosburgh win

Barbara D. Livingston
The Lumber Guy returned from a 4 1/2-month layoff to win the six-furlong Vosburgh, earning a fees-paid berth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint plus a travel allowance.

Although no final decisions have been made, it appears three of the top five finishers from last Saturday’s Grade 1 Vosburgh at Belmont Park could be headed to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita on Nov. 3.

The Lumber Guy, who returned from a 4 1/2-month layoff to win the six-furlong Vosburgh; Poseidon’s Warrior, a good third after contesting the pace from the rail; and Sean Avery, who finished a disappointing fifth; could all meet again in the Sprint, their connections confirmed this week.

Belmont Park: Emcee could go in Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile

Barbara D. Livingston
Forego winner Emcee might be sent to the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile instead of the Sprint to take advantage of Santa Anita's track, which has been kind to speed.

ELMONT, N.Y. - After watching the races from Santa Anita last weekend, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said he may pre-enter Forego winner Emcee in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile as well as the Sprint.

McLaughlin said the speed-favoring nature of Santa Anita’s main track prompted him to present that scenario to Simon Crisford, the racing manager for Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin Stable.

“We’re going to look at both spots,” McLaughlin said. “We didn’t like the two-turn thing, but watching the races out there it’s been all speed.”

Belmont Park: My Happy Face gets distance test in Frizette

Barbara D. Livingston
My Happy Face wins a maiden race by 21 1/4 lengths at Saratoga.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Dreaming of Julia, who has won her first two starts by a combined 26 3/4 lengths, will be the favorite in Saturday’s Grade 1, $400,000 Frizette.

My Happy Face, who won her second start by 21 1/4 lengths, could be her main rival in the one mile race, which offers the winner an automatic spot in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile: Goldencents looks to earn his way into race

Shigeki Kikkawa
Goldencents, with jockey Kevin Krigger up, was a 7 1/4-length winner of his debut at Del Mar. He runs in Saturday’s Grade 1 Champagne.

Saturday’s Grade 1, $400,000 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park is a Win and You’re In race in more ways than one for Goldencents.

The winner of the Champagne earns an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Nov. 3 at Santa Anita with pre-entry fees paid and a $10,000 travel stipend provided by the Breeders’ Cup.

But Goldencents is not nominated to the Breeders’ Cup, and his connections would have to pay to supplemental fee to that 1 1/16-mile race.

Belmont Park: Chief Havoc dangerous European shipper in Champagne

ELMONT, N.Y. – It pays to take notice when the European-based trainer Jeremy Noseda ships a horse to New York for a stakes race.

In 2010, Noseda won the Grade 3 Gotham at Aqueduct with Awesome Act. Last year, he shipped Western Aristocrat to Belmont Park to win the Grade 1 Jamaica. In the last seven years, Noseda has three stakes wins from nine starters in New York.
