Breeders' Cup: Wise Dan moves to top of many Horse of the Year ballots

Wise Dan's victory in the Breeders' Cup Mile may have secured him a Horse of the Year title.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Americans were to go to the polls Tuesday to elect a president. Eclipse Award voters will have to wait a little longer to cast their ballots. But while there are still nearly two months remaining in the year, most of the campaigning for 2012 was completed last weekend at Santa Anita in the Breeders’ Cup, in which Mile winner Wise Dan emerged as the leading contender for Horse of the Year.

ARCADIA, Calif. – After a wild journey down the Triple Crown trail in 2012, the connections of dual classic winner I’ll Have Another could be back for more in 2013 with He’s Had Enough.

In his first start on dirt in Saturday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita, He’s Had Enough finished a rallying second, falling a head short at the wire to the undefeated Shanghai Bobby after encountering traffic around the turn.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Dale Romans was getting on a Kentucky-bound airplane Sunday morning with his family, still reveling in the aftermath of winning another huge race. The victory by Little Mike in the Breeders’ Cup Turf on Saturday at Santa Anita was the eighth in a Grade 1 for the Romans stable this year, further strengthening an argument for Romans to be voted his first Eclipse Award for top trainer.

2012 Breeders' Cup: Lasix ban results in trio of 2-year-olds bleeding

Monument, being eased to the wire in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, was one of two horses in the race trained by John Sadler to have bled without the medication Lasix.

ARCADIA, Calif. - At least three juveniles who participated in Breeders’ Cup races last weekend at Santa Anita bled, according to their connections, after seemingly contrary information was put out by the equine director of the California Horse Racing Board.

Trainer John Sadler said Sunday thta both Capo Bastone and Monument, third and last, respectively, in Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, bled. Trainer Mark Casse said that Spring in the Air, who finished fifth in Friday’s Juvenile Fillies, also bled.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile: Shanghai Bobby, He's Had Enough point toward Triple Crown trail

ARCADIA, Calif. - Shanghai Bobby and He’s Had Enough, separated by a head in Saturday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita, both came out of the race in good order, according to their connections, and will be given every opportunity to hop on the Triple Crown trail next year.

Capo Bastone, the third-place finisher in the Juvenile, was found to have bled significantly, according to his connections and will be sent to a nearby clinic for evaluation. None of the 2-year-olds who raced at this year’s Breeders’ Cup was permitted to run on Lasix.

Breeders' Cup Mile: Wise Dan wastes no time going back to Kentucky

Wise Dan got a 107 Beyer Speed Figure for his victory in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Wise Dan set a Santa Anita turf-course record of 1:31.78 winning the Breeders’ Cup Mile here Saturday. He might also have set a Breeders’ Cup record for speed of departure from a host venue.

Wise Dan was shipped back to Kentucky from California in the middle of the night, leaving Santa Anita before 3 a.m. Sunday. He came, he saw, he conquered – and he got out of Dodge. His Beyer Speed Figure for the BC MIle came back a 107.

Breeders' Cup Classic: Fort Larned, most of his rivals, intend to race again in 2013

Fort Larned, getting a friendly pat from jockey Brian Hernandez, received a 117 Beyer Speed Figure for his win in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

ARCADIA, Calif. – All the principal runners from Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita, including the victorious Fort Larned, emerged from the race in good order, and most will remain in training for next year, their respective trainers said Sunday morning.

Fort Larned left Sunday morning for a flight to Kentucky, where he will be in light training at Churchill Downs before heading to Florida during the winter to begin his 2013 campaign, trainer Ian Wilkes said.

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile: Asmussen retained faith in Tapizar

The connections of Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Tapizar have not yet discussed whether he retire or return to race again next season.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Steve Asmussen was hoarse Sunday morning, apparently because he had rooted too enthusiastically for a horse. Asmussen seemed tired but very happy when all alone trackside at Santa Anita, just a few feet and a few hours removed from where and when he greeted the victorious Tapizar following the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

Beyer: No contest in race for Horse of the Year

 After a year full of disappointments, the 2012 racing season came to a climax in the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita on Saturday, with Game On Dude and Wise Dan trying to prove - in separate races - that they deserved the Eclipse Award as Horse of the Year.

The day produced an unequivocal championship performance and what ought to be a clear-cut winner of racing's highest honor. Wise Dan is the champ. He excelled on the day that Game On Dude flopped.

Breeders' Cup: Saturday wagering dips 8.8 percent from a year ago

Total commingled handle on the nine Breeders’ Cup races Saturday at Santa Anita Park dropped 8.8 percent compared with last year's event at Churchill Downs, according to a chart-by-chart analysis of the races.

Coupled with an 11.7 percent decline in betting on the six Friday races, total commingled betting for the 15 Breeders’ Cup races held at Santa Anita on Friday and Saturday was down 9.5 percent, from $140.1 million last year to $126.8 million this year. It was the second year in a row that betting on the Breeders’ Cup has declined on a year-over-year basis.
