Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile: Strong return could put Shanghai Bobby in field

Barbara D. Livingston
Shanghai Bobby will return in Friday’s $100,000 Aljamin overnight stakes at Belmont Park.

Shanghai Bobby, who cemented an Eclipse Award by winning last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, could return to Santa Anita in either the Dirt Mile or the Sprint, depending on how he runs in Friday’s $100,000 Aljamin overnight stakes at Belmont Park.

After sweeping his five starts as a 2-year-old for Todd Pletcher, including the Hopeful and Champagne, Shanghai Bobby has raced only twice in 2013, suffering his first defeat when second in the Holy Bull and finishing fifth in the Florida Derby.

The result was not very surprising to Matz, who expected good things from the 4-year-old Colonial Flag and the 5-year-old Minakshi.

Little Mike targets Joe Hirsch Turf Classic

Tom Keyser
Little Mike has not been as sharp this year as in 2012 but his owner expects him to regain his best form in the Arlington Million.

Owner Carlo Vaccarezza has announced that Little Mike, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Turf last year, will run next in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic on Sept. 28 at Belmont instead of the Shadwell Turf Mile a week later at Keeneland.

The $600,000 Joe Hirsch goes at 1 1/2 miles, while the $750,000 Shadwell is run at a mile. Both are Grade 1 events.

Vaccarezza had been leaning toward the Shadwell Mile since Little Mike, winless in four starts this year, finished sixth in the Aug. 17 Arlington Million. Dale Romans trains.

Coady Photography
My Brown Eyed Guy will make his next start in the $300,000 In Reality division of the Florida Stallion Stakes at Calder on Oct. 12.

With three straight wins, including open-length victories in a pair of Stallion Stakes races at Calder, My Brown Eyed Guy has proven to be the dominant 2-year-old male in south Florida this summer.

His connections may try to see if he’s more than that.

Trainer Kathleen O’Connell said she and owner/breeder Gilbert Campbell are considering the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita on Nov. 2 for their gelding by With Distinction, a decision that will be based on how he fares in the $300,000 In Reality division of the Florida Stallion Stakes at Calder on Oct. 12.

Woodbine: Wise Dan eyes Shadwell Turf Mile as final Breeders' Cup prep

Michael Burns
Wise Dan became the first two-time winner of the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile on Sunday, prevailing by 3 1/2 lengths under John Velazquez.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Wise Dan, winner of the 2012 Woodbine Mile, was hailed as a conquering hero well before the field of six went to the post for Sunday’s Grade 1, $1 million Woodbine Mile. And, fortunately for the faithful, the 6-year-old version of Wise Dan proved to be as good or better than the one previously seen here as he cruised to a 3 1/2-length victory in a track-record time of 1:31.75 under regular rider John Velazquez.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – American trainer Michael Matz dominated the Canadian Stakes here Sunday, as his Minakshi and Colonial Flag finished first and second in the 1 1/8-mile turf race for fillies and mares.

The Canadian, a Grade 2 race worth $306,400, also was a Win and You’re In event for the first time this year, offering a fees-paid berth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf to the winner. Minakshi would receive the $40,000 entry fee and the $10,000 travel allowance but is not Breeders’ Cup-eligible and would have to be supplemented at a cost of $200,000.

Woodbine: Llanarmon wins maiden in Natalma Stakes

Michael Burns
Llanarmon (right), ridden by Emma-Jayne Wilson, wins the Grade 2 Natalma Stakes by three-quarters of a length Saturday at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Llanarmon ($20.40) graduated in dramatic style Saturday at Woodbine in the Grade 2 Natalma Stakes, in which the favored Ready to Act unseated jockey Rajiv Maragh, who appeared to escape serious injury.

Ready to Act stalked the front-running Unspurned in the one-mile turf route for 2-year-old fillies before making the lead early in the stretch. Ready to Act ducked in at the eighth pole, and a trailing horse came over the top of the fallen Maragh. Ready to Act, a New York shipper trained by Chad Brown, came back fine.
