Breeders' Cup Marathon: Long distance should suit Worldly

Barbara D. Livingston
Worldly is one of six horses trainer Paul McGee has entered on Wednesday's card at Churchill Downs.

The roster of horses pointed toward the Breeders’ Cup Marathon continues to grow, with the addition of Grade 2-placed stakes winner Worldly.

Owner Chad Schumer confirmed that the 6-year-old Worldly, a son of A.P. Indy, will target the $500,000 Marathon, to be run Friday, Nov. 1 at Santa Anita, noting that the horse’s breeding leans toward stamina and the North American racing calendar does not offer an abundance of longer-distanced races at high levels.

Kitten Kaboodle, the only maiden in a field of 10 2-year-old fillies, got through a rail opening after straightening for home and galloped to an emphatic score Wednesday in the Jessamine Stakes, giving Ken and Sarah Ramsey yet another homebred graded stakes winner and another starter for the Nov. 1-2 Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita.

Santa Anita: Jeranimo keeps options open

Benoit & Associates
Jeranimo, who won the Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes at Del Mar in July, will be pre-entered for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint and the $2 million BC Mile.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Jeranimo, winner of the Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes at Del Mar in July, will be pre-entered for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint and the $2 million BC Mile on turf.

Trainer Mike Pender said earlier this week that by pre-entering for both races “we can see what each one shapes up like.”

Owned by B.J. Wright and Robert LaPenta, Jeranimo, 7, finished ninth in his last two starts – the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Aug. 25 and the $250,000 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita on Sept. 28. The Eddie Read Stakes in his most recent race on turf.

Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf: Laughing likely to take shot at title

Tom Keyser
Laughing (right) wins the Grade 1 Flower Bowl, making her 4 for 4 on the year.

With a potential championship on the line, Flower Bowl winner Laughing is likely to be supplemented to the Breeders’ Cup for $100,000 to run in the $2 million Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 2, trainer Alan Goldberg said Tuesday.

Perfect in four starts this year, all in graded company, Laughing could join one of the better casts for a Breeders’ Cup race this year, one that also is expected to include Beverly D. winner Dank and top Southern California-based mares Tiz Flirtatious and Marketing Mix.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf: O'Brien may follow familiar path to race

Barbara D. Livingston
Bobby’s Kitten, who won the Grade 3 Pilgrim Stakes on Sunday, might be favored in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

Last year, trainer Aidan O’Brien won his second straight Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf with George Vancouver who came into the race off of a second-place finish in the Group 1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket. This Saturday, O’Brien has no less than eight of the possible 14 starters in the seven-furlong Dewhurst, and there is an excellent chance one of the eight will follow George Vancouver’s successful path.

Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile: Goldencents, Centralinteligence re-routed to race

Barbara D. Livingston
Goldencents, who earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 109 in a runner-up effort in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship at six furlongs, will forgo the Breeders’ Cup Sprint in favor of the Dirt Mile, according to trainer Doug O’Neill.

Despite the announcement of Liaison’s retirement earlier in the week, this year’s Dirt Mile should have little trouble matching its six-year average of a 10-horse field, and may exceed that number. There is no imposing standout, and it historically has been a terrific place to take a shot. Favorites have been shut out, and other than Discreet Cat’s third-place finish in the inaugural running, no post-time choice has finished in the money, with the average winner going off at just over 15-1.

Breeders' Cup Mile: Roster of prospective starters remains thin

Benoit & Associates
He Be Fire n Ice (left), second to Obviously in the Del Mar Mile, remains under consideration for the Breeders' Cup Mile.

The notion of a Breeders’ Cup Mile top-10 list is predicated on 10 horses actually running. In 2012, for the first time in Mile history, that didn’t happen, and a year after Wise Dan defeated just eight foes, the 2013 Mile could go with even fewer starters.

Breeders' Cup Turf: Japan Cup better option for Novellist

Shigeki Kikkawa
The European-based Grandeur won two stakes in California last year, including the Hollywood Turf Cup.

Novellist, winner of three consecutive Group 1 races who missed the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe last weekend because of illness, will not travel to California for the $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 2.

Trainer Andreas Wohler said Wednesday that Novellist is a candidate for the $5.36 million Japan Cup at Tokyo Racecourse on Nov. 24. He said Novellist has recovered from the temperature detected in the days before the Arc and that the decision to point to the Japan Cup is based largely on race timing.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile: O'Connell has hot prospect in My Brown Eyed Guy

Coady Photography
My Brown Eyed Guy has won three consecutive races, including the first two legs of the Florida Stallion Stakes.

From what trainer Kathleen O’Connell has seen so far, this year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile is wide open.

“I feel it could be anybody’s kind of dash,” O’Connell said. “No disrespect to anybody’s horse, but I haven’t seen a super-big gun out there.”

Breeders' Cup Classic: Fort Larned readies for repeat bid

Barbara D. Livingston
Fort Larned, who won last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic at 9-1, will enter this year’s edition off a win in the Homecoming Classic.

Fort Larned is set to defend his title in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita following his recent victory in the inaugural Homecoming Classic at Churchill Downs, and his trainer, Ian Wilkes, believes he can improve off that final prep.

Fort Larned had to miss the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga at the end of August with tightness in his hind end, causing him to lose training time. Wilkes said that while Fort Larned was good enough to win the Homecoming Classic, he was not at his best.
