Santa Anita: At 7, Game On Dude still trying to win the big one

Tom Keyser
Mike Smith won three Breeders' Cup races, but finished ninth aboard favored Game On Dude in the $5 million Classic.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Game On Dude will be in a familiar position at Santa Anita on Saturday – the heavy favorite in the $300,000 San Antonio Stakes.

A victory would make Game On Dude the first three-time winner of the Grade 2 San Antonio in the race’s 76-year history and put the gelding in a position for a record third victory in the Santa Anita Handicap on March 8, a race he won in 2011 and 2013.

But victories in those races would do little to answer a question dominating his career: Can Game On Dude win the Breeders’ Cup Classic?

Hollywood Park: Centralinteligence back at barn after surgery

Shigeki Kikkawa
Centralinteligence has a 70 to 80 percent chance of racing again, veterinarians told trainer Ron Ellis.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Centralinteligence could return to racing after undergoing surgery for a condylar fracture suffered Nov. 1 in the BC Dirt Mile, trainer Ron Ellis said.

Centralinteligence was eased in the BC Dirt Mile after racing in seventh for the first half of the race. He was vanned off and underwent surgery to have two stabilizing pins inserted in his right front leg over the weekend. The gelding was back at Ellis’s barn at Hollywood Park on Wednesday.

Dick Jerardi: Will Take Charge gives Pennsylvania Derby's prestige a boost

Barbara D. Livingston
Will Take Charge (left), second by a nose in the Breeders' Cup Classic, may help convince the American Graded Stakes Committee to upgrade the Pennsylvania Derby to Grade 1 status.

When Parx Racing management moved the Pennsylvania Derby from Labor Day to the third Saturday in September, they really had three goals. One was to attract the Travers winner. Second, they wanted to give stakes-caliber 3-year-olds a last chance to run against their own age. Third, they wanted their race to be six weeks from the Breeders’ Cup so it could act as a final prep.

Well, they hit the trifecta this year and nearly got the Pennsylvania Derby winner home in the Classic.

Golden Gate notes: She's a Tiger's Breeders' Cup DQ hard pill to swallow

Tom Keyser
She's a Tiger (right) crosses the finish line a nose in front of Ria Antonia in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, but was taken down and placed second for interference.

Excitement in Northern California was high when She’s a Tiger crossed the finish line a nose in front of Ria Antonia in Saturday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita. She’s a Tiger, who trained early in her career and won her debut at Pleasanton, gave Golden Gate Fields simulcast bettors and her connections a thrill – until the inquiry sign began flashing.

The longer the sign flashed, the more her trainer, Jeff Bonde, and part-owner Allen Aldrich felt a sinking feeling in their hearts.

Breeders' Cup: Euros win five races, sweep three exactas

Susie Raisher
European horses won the Marathon, Juvenile Turf, Filly and Mare Turf, Juvenile Fillies Turf, and the Turf.

California, it was said, never was the ideal spot for Europeans to ship for the Breeders’ Cup. The trip was too far, the weather too hot, the courses not suited to the horses. When Santa Anita switched from a synthetic surface – which the Euros loved in 2008 and 2009 – back to an American-style dirt track, it was said that the Euros would think twice about shipping, if they shipped at all. And when the Breeders’ Cup’s plan to ban Lasix from all its races slipped away earlier this year, it was said the decision would have a negative impact on overseas participation.

Breeders’ Cup: Englehart still soaking in Juvenile Fillies win

Barbara D. Livingston
Ria Antonia wins the BC Juvenile Fillies for trainer Jeremiah Englehart (right).

ARCADIA, Calif. – Trainer Jeremiah Englehart thought the highlight of his year was going to be when his New York-bred King Kreesa finished a more-than-respectable second to reigning Horse of the Year Wise Dan in the Grade 2 Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga.

That was relegated to second place when Ria Antonia, a horse that wasn’t even in his barn two months ago, was moved by the Santa Anita stewards to first place in Saturday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, after first-place finisher She’s a Tiger was disqualified for bumping with Ria Antonia in deep stretch.

Santa Anita - BC Marathon (race 6)

COMMENT: London Bridge became the first New York-bred to grace the Breeders’ Cup winner’s circle as the son of Arch (sire of Blame) proved the top stayer. He came to the United States for this after campaigning in England and France. He bided his time early while Commander and then Suns Out Guns Out set the early pace. He steadily advanced, moved closer while staying wide and out in the clear, and doggedly kept to his task to wear down a couple stubborn rivals.

Wise Dan emerges from Breeders' Cup as Horse of the Year front-runner

Barbara D. Livingston
Wise Dan's body of work this season, capped by his victory in the Breeders' Cup Mile, will make it difficult to deny him a second Horse of the Year title.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Game On Dude was the pro-tem leader for Horse of the Year coming into the Breeders’ Cup last weekend at Santa Anita, with Princess of Sylmar considered one of the viable candidates should he fail in the Classic.

Both, though, were soundly defeated, Game On Dude faded to ninth in the Classic on Saturday, with Princess of Sylmar last of six in the Distaff on Friday, leaving ol’ reliable Wise Dan as the front-runner to repeat as Horse of the Year following his victory on Saturday in the Mile.
