Ivanhowe moves into Arc picture with Group 1 win in Germany

Ivanhowe comfortably won the Group 1 Grosser Preis Von Baden on Sunday at Iffezheim Racecourse in Baden-Baden, Germany.

Rallying from 10th in an 11-horse field, Ivanhowe collared pacesetting Sea the Moon with about a quarter-mile left in the 11/2-mile Grosser Preis Von Baden, and to the surprise of most, pushed past for a three-length victory.

Sea the Moon, the heavy favorite, came into the race unbeaten in four starts and was the ante-post favorite for the Prix de l’Arc d’Triomphe on the strength of his 11-length tour de force July 6 in the German Derby.

Moreno headed to Jockey Club Gold Cup, but not Itsmyluckyday

Debra Roma
Woodward runner-up Moreno (right) will point to the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park, while winner Itsmyluckyday may be supplemented to the Breeders' Cup Classic.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.  - If there is to be a Round 3 between Itsmyluckyday and Moreno, it is unlikely to occur in the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Sept. 27.

Itsmyluckyday beat Moreno in Saturday’s Grade 1, $600,000 Woodward at Saratoga by one half-length, reversing a 1 1/4-length loss to Moreno in the Grade 1 $1.25 million Whitney here four weeks earlier.

Wise Dan wasn't hard used by Velazquez in Bernard Baruch win

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Charlie LoPresti said jockey John Velazquez only rode Wise Dan hard for about a quarter-mile in Saturday's Bernard Baruch Handicap.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -  Wise Dan thrust his head out of his stall, looking around for his feed tub shortly before 10 a.m. on Sunday, acting bright and happy. He did not look like a horse who, less than 24 hours earlier, had carried 127 pounds to a gut-wrenching and near record-setting victory coming off a four-month layoff in the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch Handicap.

Big Macher will train up to Breeders' Cup Sprint

Benoit & Associates
Trainer Richard Baltas says he feels Big Macher runs best when his races are well-spaced, so he will not have a prep race prior to the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

DEL MAR, Calif. – The calling card for Big Macher during his rise from a maiden claimer to a Grade 1 stakes winner has been his will to win, but that spirit was absent last Sunday in the Pat O’Brien Stakes, a performance trainer Richard Baltas believes was due to coming back too quickly for a second race following a lengthy layoff.

Big Macher won the Grade 1 Bing Crosby over six furlongs early in the meet but finished sixth of seven in the seven-furlong Pat O’Brien.

Ex-claimer Big John B captures Del Mar Handicap

DEL MAR, Calif.- Since the start of his career in November 2011, Big John B has run in 16 claiming races at Aqueduct, Belmont, Churchill Downs, Gulfstream Park, Keeneland, and Monmouth Park. He was claimed in six of those races, most recently for $50,000 by Michael House at Keeneland in April.

Little could any of Big John B’s previous owners and trainers envisioned what the 6-year-old gelding has become this summer.

Close Hatches dominates Personal Ensign

Barbara D. Livingston
Personal Ensign solidifies her status as the nation's top older female with a five-length score under Joel Rosario in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - In a word, brilliant.

Close Hatches, showing a terrific early turn of foot to make the lead entering the first turn, sloshed her way through the muddy mess that was Saratoga’s main track Friday, and rolled to a front-running, five-length victory in the Grade 1, $500,000 Personal Ensign Stakes at Saratoga.

In the process, Close Hatches kept her perfect record in 2014 intact at 4 for 4, maintained her stranglehold on the older filly and mare division, and earned a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff to be run on Oct. 31 at Santa Anita.
