Her Emmynency out of Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

Benoit & Associates
After winning the Surfer Girl under Joe Talamo, Her Emmynency will be pointed to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Trainer Michael Stidham said Her Emmynency is out of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. According to Stidham, Her Emmynency came down with colitis Sunday evening and is responding well to treatment at Chino Valley Equine Hospital in Chino Hills, Calif.

She was coming off a win in the $100,000 Surfer Girl at Santa Anita in her first start on turf, and looked like a serious contender in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, which like the Surfer Girl will be run at a mile at Santa Anita. The Grade 1, $1 million race for 2-year-old fillies will be run Oct. 31.

Jockeys plan tribute to Saez during BC

ARCADIA, Calif. – Jockeys at the upcoming Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita will be riding with “JS” patches on their pants and boots to honor fallen rider Juan Saez, the 17-year-old apprentice killed in a spill at Indiana Grand on Oct. 14.

A release this week by the Jockeys’ Guild said that besides the patch, jockeys also will ride with black armbands to honor “all other jockeys who have lost the lives during a race or as a result of race-related injuries.”

Day broke off into his work at the half-mile pole and worked three furlongs past the wire over a fast track. He galloped out a mile in 1:40.58, completing one circuit over the training track.

Shared Belief sharp in major Breeders' Cup work

Shigeki Kikkawa
A win in the Breeders' Cup Classic would be Shared Belief's third straight Grade 1 victory over older horses.

ALBANY, Calif. - Shared Belief was scheduled to have four works here at Golden Gate Fields between last month’s Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita, and next week’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, also at Santa Anita. But there was no doubt the work on Tuesday morning was the most important, according to trainer and co-owner Jerry Hollendorfer, and Shared Belief responded with a sharp drill that indicates he will be the deserved favorite in the $5 million Classic Nov. 1.

Daddy D T going for the green

Benoit and Associates
Daddy D T, with Corey Nakatani aboard, wins the Oak Tree Juvenile Turf by a half-length Wednesday.

Daddy D T earned his best Beyer Speed Figure on dirt in the FrontRunner but won his maiden on the grass in the Oak Tree Juvenile Turf, giving him the option of running in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile or the Juvenile Turf. Trainer John Sadler said Monday that the Santa Anita-based Daddy D T would be pre-entered in the Grade 1, $1 million Juvenile Turf, to be run on Oct. 31.

“For the Breeders’ Cup we’re going on the grass because he’s already a proven commodity on the turf,” Sadler said.

Seek Again trains at Saratoga on Thursday morning ahead of Saturday's Grade 2, $500,000 Fourstardave Handicap.

The complexion of the Breeders’ Cup Mile changed only around the margins during the last week, a quiet spell since the shock announcement Oct. 13 that two-time Mile winner Wise Dan was out of the race with a fractured foreleg.

Ballis, Lewis hope to continue stakes momentum

Cigar Street wins the Homecoming Classic on Sept. 27 at Churchill Downs.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – What a month it was for Jake Ballis and his longtime friend, NBA star Rashard Lewis. Partners in a small stable, they won three stakes in that relatively short time frame, capped by White Rose grinding out another victory Sunday in the $125,000 Dowager Stakes at Keeneland.

“Now we need just one more in a couple weeks,” Ballis said.

Ahem, okay. Ballis is referring to the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, in which the stable will be represented by longshot Cigar Street.

“We’ll ride this momentum as long as it’ll take us,” Ballis said.

American Pharoah works like a favorite

Barbara D. Livingston
Breeders' Cup Juvenile contender Daredevil breezes a half-mile in 48.92 at Belmont on Sunday.

On the morning that pre-entries were due for the Breeders’ Cup, American Pharoah gave every indication that he remains the horse to beat in the $2 million Juvenile with a five-furlong work Monday timed by Santa Anita clockers in 58.60 seconds.

Trainer Bob Baffert said he had American Pharoah alongside the horse Front Range, but the trainer said it was apparent early that Front Range would not keep up.

“He’s still full of energy and willing to work,” Baffert said of American Pharoah. “That other horse was lapped on him a little bit at the start but he could not keep up.”
