Liam's Map cruises in Woodward

Barbara D. Livingston
After easily winning the Woodward under Javier Castellano, Liam's Map will point to either the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile or Breeders' Cup Classic.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Trainer Todd Pletcher went into Saturday’s $600,000 Woodward Stakes believing it would be a great opportunity for Liam’s Map to win his first Grade 1 stakes while serving as a stepping-stone to the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on Oct. 30.

After Liam’s Map set solid fractions all the way around and continued on to win the Grade 1 Woodward by 4 3/4 lengths over Coach Inge, Pletcher says he may have some thinking to do as it relates to the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at 1 1/4 miles. But he wasn’t about to think about it Saturday afternoon.

Gordon Lord Byron takes fourth crack at Betfred Sprint Cup

Maybe Gordon Lord Byron at age 7 isn’t quite the horse he was a year ago, but maybe he still is, and going six furlongs down the straight course at Haydock Park Racecourse always has agreed with Gordon Lord Byron.

American Pharoah points to Breeders' Cup Classic

Justin N. Lane
American Pharoah will remain in training and target the Breeders' Cup Classic on Oct. 31 at Keeneland.

DEL MAR, Calif. – With the belief that American Pharoah “deserves the chance to be in the sport’s premier year-end event,” his owner and breeder, Ahmed Zayat, confirmed Thursday that American Pharoah would remain in training and point to the Breeders’ Cup Classic, mirroring the comments trainer Bob Baffert made 48 hours earlier.

While Baffert came around sooner that Zayat, the final call was, ultimately, up to Zayat, who in the immediate aftermath of American Pharoah’s loss in the Travers Stakes last Saturday at Saratoga said he was leaning “60-40” toward retirement.

Gleneagles, one of the best horses in Europe, is being pointed to the Breeders’ Cup Classic, trainer Aidan O’Brien announced Tuesday.

The 3-year-old colt, winner of the English 2000 Guineas in May, has been a miler during his excellent overseas career, but will try to stretch his stamina over the Classic’s 1 1/4 miles at Keeneland this fall if his connections’ plan holds.
