Stellar Wind sharp in workout; next start to be determined

Benoit & Associates
Stellar Wind will be pointed to the Breeders' Cup Distaff this fall after easily winning the Torrey Pines Stakes.

Stellar Wind, the winner of four graded stakes this year, including the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks last April, worked five furlongs in 59.40 seconds at Santa Anita on Saturday for an October campaign that remains undefined.

Trainer John Sadler said that Stellar Wind will be considered for the Grade 1 Spinster Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 3 but could be trained up to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Keeneland on Oct. 30.

“I want to see who is running,” he said. “I’ll either run her one more time or two more times this year.”

Tin Type Gal wins a maiden race at Saratoga in her second start.

ELMONT, N.Y. – A year ago, Lady Eli rolled to a three-length victory in the Miss Grillo Stakes on turf at Belmont Park and, a month later, captured the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita.

On Sunday, 11 2-year-old fillies will attempt to win the Grade 3, $200,000 Miss Grillo, which probably will propel the winner to the $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf next month at Keeneland.

Bongard a statebred race that looks like a graded stakes

Championofthenile earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 94 - highest in the country by a 2-year-old male - for this maiden score at Saratoga.

ELMONT, N.Y. – A fascinating matchup among three of the top maiden-winning juvenile males at the Saratoga meet is on tap Sunday in the most unlikeliest of spots – the $150,000 Bertram F. Bongard Stakes for New York-breds at Belmont Park.

Championofthenile, Sudden Surprise, and Get Jets are three of the five horses entered in the Bongard, a seven-furlong race that goes as race 3 on the 10-race program. Any one of the three would garner serious support in next Saturday’s Grade 1 Champagne Stakes, a one-turn mile at Belmont.

Ashleyluvssugar faces must-win situation in King Pellinore

Shigeki Kikkawa
Trainer Peter Eurton says Ashleyluvssugar must deliver a huge performance Sunday in order to move on to the Breeders' Cup Turf.

ARCADIA, Calif. – For Ashleyluvssugar to advance to the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Keeneland on Oct. 31, a win in Sunday’s $75,000 King Pellinore Stakes at Santa Anita is a must.

And not just any win. Ashleyluvssugar needs to give a flashy performance.

“I think we need to see a big performance,” trainer Peter Eurton said on Friday. “There are too many tough horses coming from Europe. A mediocre performance will not work. You have to come up with a lot of dough to run in it.”

Shigeki Kikkawa
This victory in the Shoemaker Mile assured Talco of a spot in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Say this about Grade 1-winning turf miler Talco – he is dependable. Either first or second in six straight races and already assured of a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, Talco will prep for the BC by running Sunday in the Grade 2 City of Hope Mile at Santa Anita.

“He’s pretty reliable; he runs well every time,” trainer John Sadler said. “And he’s already in [the BC Mile], so I’m not worried about anything.”

Embellish the Lace out of Breeders’ Cup Distaff

Barbara D. Livingston
Alabama Stakes winner Embellish the Lace will miss the Breeders' Cup Distaff due to an injury, according to trainer Tony Dutrow.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Embellish the Lace, the winner of the Grade 1 Alabama, came out of her fifth-place finish in last Saturday’s Grade 1 Cotillion at Parx with an injury and will not make the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, trainer Tony Dutrow said Thursday.

Instead, Embellish the Lace will be offered for sale at the Fasig-Tipton November sale.

“She has an injury that will keep her out of the Breeders’ Cup,” said Dutrow, who declined to disclose the injury. “She could be rehabbed and brought back to the races, but [owner Alex Lieblong] has chosen not to do that.”

Ironicus out for year with broken leg

Barbara D. Livingston
Ironicus set a Saratoga course record for 1 1/16 miles winning the Bernard Baruch in August.

ELMONT, N.Y. – By virtue of his track-record performance in the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch Handicap at Saratoga this month, Ironicus emerged as a top contender for next month’s Breeders’ Cup Mile. Unfortunately, Ironicus will miss the Breeders’ Cup after fracturing the cannon bone of his right foreleg, trainer Shug McGaughey said Thursday.

McGaughey said Ironicus would undergo surgery to have one screw inserted into the bone to stabilize the injury and promote healing. McGaughey said Ironicus would need at least 60 days off but will be pointed to a 5-year-old campaign next year.
