Tonalist, Red Vine among Breeders' Cup workers

Barbara D. Livingston
Tonalist wins the Jockey Club Gold Cup by 4 3/4 lengths Saturday at Belmont Park.

ELMONT, N.Y. – After watching two of his four potential Breeders’ Cup horses put in workouts Saturday morning at Belmont Park, trainer Christophe Clement had reason to be both happy and frustrated.

Clement was very happy with the moves Tonalist (Breeders’ Cup Classic) and Red Vine (Dirt Mile) put in over the Belmont main track. He was frustrated that for the 10th consecutive year, he and his fellow New York trainers have to ship to run in the Breeders’ Cup. This year’s event will be held at Keeneland for the first time.

Nine potential Breeders’ Cup starters breezed over a fast track on Friday, and Limousine Liberal and Sticksstatelydude were all but confirmed for the Sprint and Juvenile, respectively, by the time they had finished cooling out after their works.

Slumber probably headed for Breeders’ Cup Turf after all

Michael Amoruso
Slumber wins the Manhattan on Saturday at Belmont.

ELMONT, N.Y. – The connections of Grade 1 winner Slumber have had a change of heart and probably will run him in the $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf.

Initially leaning against supplementing to the 1 1/2-mile turf race because of the presence of top European horses Golden Horn and Flintshire, Slumber’s ownership group, led by Michael Dubb, likely will pay the $100,000 supplemental fee to go in the Turf, to be run Oct. 31 at Keeneland.

The final decision will be made after Slumber works this weekend at Belmont Park. Pre-entries have to be made by Monday.

Nyquist works five furlongs toward BC Juvenile

Cavorting, Wedding Toast get in half-mile drills

Barbara D. Livingston
Cavorting broke off a little early in her work on Thursday, but ended up working to trainer Kiaran McLaughlin's satisfaction.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Kiaran McLaughlin was monitoring important workouts on two fronts Thursday morning, with his top sprinting 3-year-old filly, Cavorting, breezing at Belmont Park and his leading older female, Wedding Toast, putting in a workout at Saratoga.

For the second straight week, Cavorting went her first quarter (23.79 seconds) faster than her second (25.75) under exercise rider Renzo Morales.

Hovdey: Breeders’ Cup offers beacon of light for Hronis

If it’s okay, let’s deal with the sad part of the story up front.

The owner-trainer combination of Hronis Racing and John Sadler had their sights firmly set on this year’s Breeders’ Cup for their fiery French miler, Talco. The son of Pivotal earned his way into the BC Mile last June with a smart score in the Win-and-You’re-In Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita. After that, he finished a game second in the Del Mar Mile to underline his form, and there was only the City of Hope Mile on Sept. 27 at Santa Anita before it would be next stop: Keeneland.
