Tepin cruises to victory in Breeders' Cup Mile

Susie Raisher
Tepin, with Julien Leparoux aboard, scores by 2 1/4 lengths Saturday in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 4-year-old filly Tepin, who entered this season without even a stakes win, got good in the spring and even better in late summer and fall, and where most horses improve and decline as they grow and change, tire and freshen, Tepin just has kept blooming. Three weeks after winning her second Grade 1, and while facing males for the first time, she dominated a world-class field of milers and won the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile by 2 1/4 lengths under Julien Leparoux.

Barbara D. Livingston
Runhappy (left), ridden by Edgar Prado, takes the Breeders' Cup Sprint by three-quarters of a length Saturday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – For all the accolades Runhappy received immediately after his record-setting, three-quarter-length victory over four-time Grade 1 winner Private Zone in Saturday’s $1.5 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Keeneland, nobody paid him a bigger compliment than his own jockey, Hall of Famer Edgar Prado.

“I remember thinking after he won the Phoenix that I have only been on one horse who ran that fast and wasn’t breathing hard after the race,” said Prado. “And that was Barbaro. The similarity between this horse and Barbaro is very close.”

Wavell Avenue, ridden by Joel Rosario, wins the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint by 1 3/4 lengths Saturday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – When they met five weeks beforehand in New York, La Verdad was able to hold off an oncoming Wavell Avenue.

But not this time – and not on a far bigger stage.

Given an additional half-furlong, and with La Verdad having been weakened by a couple of earlier challenges, Wavell Avenue stormed down the center of the track to turn the tables in the ninth running of the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on Saturday at Keeneland.

Songbird, based in California with trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, has won all four of her starts by a combined 22 lengths. She rolled into the Juvenile Fillies off Grade 1 victories in the Del Mar Debutante and Chandelier Stakes. Remarkably, her 4 1/2-length margin of victory in the Chandelier is her closest call to date.

Barbara D. Livingston
Liam's Map, fifth after the first six furlongs, rallies under Javier Castellano to win the final race of his career in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Todd Pletcher certainly was going to enjoy the victories recorded Friday by Liam’s Map in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and Race Day in the Grade 2 Fayette at Keeneland.

But when he allowed himself to look to the future, he did so with some trepidation, knowing that Liam’s Map and Race Day, as well as several of his other older male dirt graded stakes winners, are heading to the breeding shed in 2016.
