Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies: Baffert running American Cleopatra, Noted and Quoted in Chandelier

Benoit & Associates
American Cleopatra will remain in California for Saturday's Grade 1 Chandelier Stakes.

The Grade 1 Chandelier Stakes on Saturday is a course and distance prep for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, which will be held at Santa Anita in five weeks and run at 1 1/16 miles.

The Chandelier also is the third of five Win and You’re In races for the division. Sweet Loretta and Pretty City Dancer earned fees-paid berths in the Juvenile Fillies for their dead-heat win in the Spinaway at Saratoga. Daddys Lil Darling punched her ticket by winning the Pocahontas at Churchill Downs.

Breeders' Cup Distaff: History no hurdle for Songbird

Barbara D. Livingston
Songbird will try to become the 11th 3-year-old to win the Breeders' Cup Distaff.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Even while her win streak grows, the undefeated Songbird has one conspicuous void on her résumé – she has never faced older fillies and mares.

Songbird is the only 3-year-old targeting the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, which might be the deepest ever. In addition to Songbird, champions Beholder and Stellar Wind and Grade 1 winners Cavorting, Curalina, and Forever Unbridled – all 4-year-olds or older – make the Distaff one of the most widely anticipated races of Breeders’ Cup 2016.

Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint: Carina Mia, Cathryn Sophia likely to shorten up

Barbara D. Livingston
Carina Mia appears pointed toward the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, according to trainer Bill Mott.

After both were soundly defeated by Songbird last weekend in the Grade 1 Cotillion at Parx, it appears that both Carina Mia and Cathryn Sophia will now be pointed to the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on Nov. 5 at Santa Anita.

Both 3-year-olds stand to benefit not only from avoiding Songbird, a shoo-in for a divisional Eclipse Award, but also the shorter distance of the Filly and Mare Sprint. Both figure among a core of major contenders in the seven-furlong race, with a handful of remaining preps helping to determine the other favorites.

Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint: Eddie D Stakes should clarify picture

Benoit & Associates
So Sweetitiz won twice in three tries on Santa Anita's turf.

A crowded picture for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint should become significantly clearer in the coming days, as host track Santa Anita opens its fall meet with the major local prep – the Grade 3, $100,000 Eddie D Stakes, providing an important chance to get a prep over an idiosyncratic turf course.

Santa Anita’s configuration cards the Turf Sprint at 6 1/2 furlongs on the downhill turf course, and in the previous five runnings of the event on that course, four of the winners had previously won there.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf: Brave Anna emerges as top contender

Keeneland/Coady Photography
Lady Aurelia, winning a maiden race, bled during the Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket and will get 90 days of rest.

The surprise win by Brave Anna in the Grade 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse in England last Saturday gives Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien the early favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 4.

Tara's Tango headed to Spinster

Benoit & Associates
Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita on Nov. 4 is a goal he would like to pursue with Tara’s Tango.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Tara’s Tango won her first Grade 1 in March at Santa Anita, before Beholder and Stellar Wind launched their 2016 campaigns.

Tara’s Tango will try for a second Grade 1 in a race that does not include the two leading older fillies and mares in California.

Instead of facing Beholder and Stellar Wind in the Grade 1, $300,000 Zenyatta Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita, Tara’s Tango will run in the Grade 1, $500,000 Spinster Stakes at Keeneland one week later.

Cavorting starts working toward Breeders' Cup Distaff

Barbara D. Livingston
Under a patient ride by Javier Castellano, Cavorting wins the Grade 1 Personal Ensign on Saturday.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Cavorting won’t have many workouts between now and the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, but she had one Monday, breezing a half-mile in 48 seconds over the Belmont Park main track.

It was the first work for Cavorting since her victory in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign at Saratoga on Aug. 27, her third straight graded stakes victory. Though she is nominated to Saturday’s Grade 1, $400,000 Beldame, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin reiterated that Cavorting will simply train up to the Distaff at Santa Anita on Nov. 4.

Songbird targets Breeders' Cup Distaff after Cotillion win

Barbara D. Livingston
Songbird dominated the Cotillion, winning by 5 3/4 lengths.

Songbird, who remained unbeaten with an authoritative victory in the Grade 1, $1 million Cotillion at Parx on Saturday, was scheduled to be flown back to Southern California on Wednesday to begin preparing for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita on Nov. 4.

Songbird ran her record to 11 for 11 with a 5 3/4-length victory over Carina Mia in the Cotillion. The race looked like a walk in the park for last year’s champion 2-year-old filly, and according to her connections, it was just that.

Brown considering several options for Connect

Barbara D. Livingston
Connect earned a 103 Beyer Speed Figure for his Pennsylvania Derby victory.

Connect's victory in the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby on Saturday not only further confuses the 3-year-old male divisional rankings, it poses trainer Chad Brown with a tricky decision regarding where to run him next.

Connect took a big step forward in his development by holding Gun Runner at bay through the final furlong of the 1 1/8-mile Pennsylvania Derby, and quite probably we haven’t seen his best race yet. But with only six starts under his belt, would the Breeders' Cup Classic against older runners be a case of too much, too soon?

Runhappy works swift five furlongs in final prep for Ack Ack

Barbara D. Livingston
Runhappy is on track to make his return to racing in the Oct. 1 Ack Ack.

Marcus O'Donnell was shaking out his legs a little after climbing off champion sprinter Runhappy on Sunday morning.

"He was wanting to bust off and do more," said O'Donnell, who is a fellow trainer at Runhappy's base at The Thoroughbred Center in Kentucky. "I pulled the irons up a little so I could restrain him."

Runhappy, who had the Keeneland track to himself shortly after it opened for training, rolled through five furlongs in 58.60 seconds, his final prep for his comeback start in the Grade 3 Ack Ack Handicap this Saturday at Churchill Downs.
