Nyquist goes slow half-mile in first work toward Classic

ARCADIA, Calif. – Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist worked a half-mile in 50.80 seconds at Santa Anita on Friday, his first serious exercise since a sixth-place finish in the Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 20.

Trainer Doug O’Neill said he plans to give Nyquist three works this month in advance of the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic here on Nov. 5. Nyquist will be retired to stud in Kentucky after the BC Classic, O’Neill said.

Nyquist worked alone on Friday. He ran the final furlong in 11.40 seconds and galloped out five furlongs in 1:04, according to O’Neill.

Brown, Casse barns square off in Bourbon Stakes

Trainers Chad Brown and Mark Casse dominate the turf ranks in North America, with runners such as Tepin, Catch a Glimpse, Flintshire, Lady Eli, Sea Calisi, Dacita, and more in their respective barns. The two also appear to be well stocked for future seasons, as both outfits are taking dead aim on the Breeders’ Cup turf events for juveniles.

O'Brien sweeps exacta in Fillies’ Mile

Rhododendron and Hydrangea gave trainer Aidan O’Brien a sweep of the first two positions in Friday’s $661,860 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket Racecourse, the second time in recent weeks that the Irish trainer has finished first and second in a Group 1 for 2-year-old fillies in England.

On Sept. 24, the O’Brien-trained Brave Anna and Roly Poly were first and second in the Cheveley Park Stakes at six furlongs at Newmarket.

O’Brien said after the Fillies’ Mile that Rhododendron and Hydrangea will be considered for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 4.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Though Lady Eli suffered her first defeat in the Grade 2 Ballston Spa at Saratoga six weeks ago, it was a victory in that she even made it back to the races.

After overcoming lamintis and then having her comeback delayed by tendonitis, Lady Eli ran a gallant second behind longshot Strike Charmer in the Ballston Spa on Aug. 27.

Syndergaard, named for Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard, will try to punch his ticket to Thoroughbred racing’s version of the fall classic – the Breeders’ Cup – when he faces open company for the first time in Saturday’s Grade 1, $500,000 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park.

Kitcat preps for Breeders' Cup Mile in Swingtime Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. – Kitcat, a Group 1 winner in her native Chile, will have her American debut in Saturday’s $70,000 Swingtime Stakes for fillies and mares at a mile on turf at Santa Anita.

Kitcat is using the race as a prep for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile here on Nov. 5. A 4-year-old, Kitcat has won her last four starts and earned a fees-paid berth in the BC Mile with her win in the Group 1 Club Hipico Falabella Stakes in Chile on May 22, her most recent start.

Mongolian Saturday enters Woodford Stakes rusty

Mongolian Saturday will be making his first start since July in the Woodford.

After logging thousands of frequent-flier miles this year, Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner Mongolian Saturday returns to Keeneland, where he blossomed last fall, to again use the Grade 3, $150,000 Woodford Stakes as a launching point toward his fall target.

The 5 1/2-furlong Woodford, which goes as the first of five graded stakes on Saturday’s card, drew 12 in the main body of the field, plus two also-eligibles.
