Dortmund needs rider for Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile

Barbara D. Livingston
By resuming training now, Dortmund is likely to be ready to race by the end of the summer.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Trainer Bob Baffert this week said Dortmund would run in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, but another major decision regarding that horse is pending. Baffert said Rafael Bejarano would not ride Dortmund in the Breeders’ Cup, but he had yet to decide who would replace him.

Bejarano rode Dortmund in his last two races, a third in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar and a second in the Grade 1 Awesome Again at Santa Anita. Both races were won by California Chrome.

Beholder and Songbird both had works Thursday. On Friday, on an inky morning with the darkness mixed with fog, Stellar Wind took to the track for a half-mile drill in 48.40 seconds under exercise rider Jose Contreras.

Trainer Al Stall Jr. said “everything will have to be perfect with the horse” for Paid Up Subscriber to run Nov. 5 in the Filly and Mare Sprint, to be run at seven furlongs at Santa Anita.

Masochistic has ‘dress rehearsal' for Breeders' Cup Sprint

Benoit & Associates
Masochistic has won both of his starts this year, most recently in the Grade 2 Pat O'Brien in August.

ARCADIA, Calif. – When Masochistic starts as one of the top contenders in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita on Nov. 5, it will be his first start in more than two months, so he had what trainer Ron Ellis called a “small dress rehearsal” on Thursday at Santa Anita. With Mike Smith aboard, Masochistic worked a quick half-mile from the gate in 45.20 seconds, the fastest time of 45 works at the distance.

“He was just going easy,” Ellis said. “Mike said his ears were pricked, and he was real relaxed. He came out of his last race great, and he runs well fresh.”

Three top turf fillies slug it out in Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup

Barbara D. Livingston
Time and Motion (left) and Catch a Glimpse, narrowly separated in the Lake Placid, will clash again in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup for 3-year-old turf fillies.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – There’s not a specific Breeders’ Cup race or an Eclipse Award to determine which 3-year-old filly is superior on turf in any given year.

For 2016, anyway, that can be left to the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup. Catch a Glimpse had been the unquestioned leader in this narrow niche, but when Time and Motion defeated her at Saratoga on the same August weekend that Harmonize won the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks, well, suddenly there was something to argue about.

Songbird, Beholder work for Breeders' Cup Distaff

Barbara D. Livingston
Songbird's victory in the Cotillion on Saturday was her 11th in as many starts.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Two of the leading candidates for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff worked minutes apart Thursday at Santa Anita while their trainers had fun monitoring each other’s activity.

Beholder worked a half-mile in 49 seconds, breezing, for Richard Mandella. Songbird worked five furlongs in 58.60 for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

Beholder’s work was planned for immediately after the 6:30 a.m. renovation break. Upon learning that Songbird also was scheduled to work, Mandella jokingly said, “Tell [Hollendorfer] we’ll meet up at the half.”
