Breeders' Cup Sprint: Baker not Joking about this chances

Barbara D. Livingston
Joking's win in the Vosburgh was the first in a Grade 1 race for trainer Charlton Baker.

Usually, a long road trip for trainer Charlton Baker and his horses means going from Finger Lakes to Belmont Park or vice versa. But Baker and his 7-year-old gelding Joking soon will embark on a serious road trip, boarding flights for Southern California to compete in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint on Nov. 5.

Baker, 50, has transformed the former claimer Joking into one of the nation’s premier sprinters, with the gelded son of Unbridled Humor capping a four-race win streak this month with a victory in the Vosburgh to give the Jamaican-born horseman the first Grade 1 win of his career.

Breeders' Cup Distaff: History is against Corona Del Inca

Brad Free
Corona Del Inca will try to become the first foreign horse to win the Breeders' Cup Distaff.

ARCADIA, Calif. – While foreign shippers have won many Breeders’ Cup races on grass, only a handful have won on dirt. Arcangues, Arazi, Sheikh Albadou, and Calidoscopio won Breeders’ Cup races on dirt in their first start in North America. It is not impossible.

But at least one Breeders’ Cup race on dirt has proven elusive – the Distaff for fillies and mares. Eight foreign shippers have tried the Distaff. None has hit the board.

So Mi Dar, whose lone defeat in five starts came when third in the Prix de l’Opera on Oct. 2, was announced as out Tuesday by numerous British racing publications, and then on Wednesday, trainer Jimmy Toner confirmed that Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup winner Time and Motion also would bypass the Breeders’ Cup.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies: Yellow Agate, Dancing Rags emerge as contenders

Barbara D. Livingston
Yellow Agate is 2 for 2 after winning the Frizette Stakes earlier this month.

Christophe Clement and Graham Motion are considering the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies for their recent Grade 1 winners, but both horsemen are taking a cautious approach and are keeping close tabs on how their horses recover from their races.

Clement conditions Yellow Agate, the winner of the Oct. 8 Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park. Motion trains Dancing Rags, who won the Alcibiades the previous day. The races are part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, giving Yellow Agate and Dancing Rags fees-paid berths in the Juvenile Fillies.

Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint: Stonetastic staying home

Bill Denver/Equi-Photo
Stonetastic, a candidate for the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, blazes six furlongs in 1:08.37 under Paco Lopez to win the Regret.

Stonetastic has been declared out of the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint following a runner-up finish as the favorite Oct. 8 in the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes at Keeneland.

“We needed a lot of scenarios to go right to convince us to go,” said Kelly Breen, who trains Stonetastic for the Stoneway Farm of Jim Stone. “We just couldn’t get enough stars to align. If she would’ve won at Keeneland, we probably would’ve gone, but she didn’t. That was the main thing.”
