Flintshire, Lady Eli among dozen Brown pre-entrants

Barbara D. Livingston
Flintshire will face just three rivals in Saturday's Joe Hirsch Turf Classic.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Led by top turf runners Flintshire and Lady Eli and dual Grade 1 dirt winner Practical Joke, trainer Chad Brown said he pre-entered 12 horses on Monday for the Breeders’ Cup races Nov. 4-5 at Santa Anita.

If all 12 get to run, it will equal the number of starters Brown had last year, when he won the Filly and Mare Sprint with Wavell Avenue and the Filly and Mare Turf with Stephanie’s Kitten. Wavell Avenue is among Brown’s pre-entrants this year in the Filly and Mare Sprint.

Watchmaker: Breeders' Cup choice for three cross-entered horses should be obvious

Four-Footed Fotos
Mondialiste received a fees-paid berth to the Breeders' Cup Turf, but will likely run in the BC Mile instead.

Pre-entries for the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita on Nov. 4 and 5 will be taken Monday, and after the oversubscribed races are dealt with on Tuesday, the pre-entries will be released to all on Wednesday.

I find two aspects to the Breeders’ Cup pre-entry process to be especially interesting. One is the work of the Breeders’ Cup Racing Directors/Secretaries Panel, which determines which horses are relegated to the also-eligible list in oversubscribed races. The other is the concept of cross-entering horses in two different Breeders’ Cup events.
