Joking forced to miss Breeders' Cup Sprint

Barbara D. Livingston
Joking's win in the Vosburgh was the first in a Grade 1 race for trainer Charlton Baker.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Joking, who went from being a $20,000 claimer to a Grade 1 winner, was entered Monday for Saturday’s $1.5 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint but is not expected to run after developing a temperature last Friday upon his arrival to Southern California, according to Charlton Baker, his owner and trainer.

Joking has not been to the track since arriving at Santa Anita on Friday, and Baker said it would take "divine intervention" for the horse to run in the Sprint.

California Chrome, Arrogate make splendid impressions

Barbara D. Livingston
Arrogate went very easily in this five-furlong work Monday at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – California Chrome and Arrogate, the top two choices on the morning line for the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Saturday at Santa Anita, both gave every indication on Monday morning that they are set to give their best in their much-anticipated battle.

California Chrome merely galloped in his first morning here after traveling on Sunday from his base at Los Alamitos, but he looked terrific doing it, while Arrogate turned in a sensational workout in his final prep for the Classic. Effinex, the runner-up in last year’s Classic, also worked.

By the Moon enjoying extended stay before Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint

Barbara D. Livingston
By the Moon works four furlongs in 50.60 seconds Monday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – By the Moon was flown to Santa Anita from her New York base on Oct. 4, a full month prior to the Breeders’ Cup. It’s a different approach – the vast majority of shippers don’t arrive until much later – but owner Samantha Siegel and trainer Michelle Nevin thought it was a good idea for a filly who figures as one of the fringe contenders Saturday in the BC Filly and Mare Sprint.

Union Strike must overcome two-month layoff

Barbara D. Livingston
Union Strike works seven furlongs in 1:27.80 at Santa Anita on Sunday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Her status as one of the handful of Grade 1 winners in the field makes Union Strike one of the horses to beat Saturday in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita. As a romping winner of the Del Mar Debutante on Sept. 3, she clearly has the credentials to be a major threat in the 1 1/16-mile race.

Obviously set to join exclusive Breeders' Cup club

Joe Labozzetta/NYRA
Obviously will make his first start Saturday in the City of Hope Mile since winning the Poker Stakes in June.

ARCADIA, Calif. – He’s back in the Breeders’ Cup – obviously.

Obviously, an 8-year-old gelding, is set to become just the fifth horse to make five Breeders’ Cup starts when he races in the Turf Sprint on Saturday. And this is no vanity entry. Obviously has won only once in four starts this year, but that win was a strong one, in the Poker at Belmont, and his defeats, two seconds and a third, all were admirable performances.

Barbara D. Livingston
Alphabet Soup now resides at Old Friends Farm in Kentucky.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Alphabet Soup doesn’t like to be passed.

“At night, when I come home and it’s dark, I open up the gate, and first I hear him and then see him – he kind of glows in the dark,” Old Friends founder and president Michael Blowen said. “He comes over, and it’s like paying a toll on the Massachusetts Turnpike – I’ve got to feed him a carrot in order to get up the hill.”
