Watchmaker: How I'd play the Breeders' Cup Ultra Pick Six

Benoit & Associates
Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita on Nov. 4 is a goal he would like to pursue with Tara’s Tango.

ARCADIA, Calif. – I subscribe to the Steve Crist philosophy regarding the pick six, which is you either bet a lot or bet small, because if you bet in the middle, over time you’re just going to get swallowed up by bigger pick six players who have the ability to purchase greater coverage.

Breeders' Cup Turf: Key contenders

KEY CONTENDERS

Found, by Galileo

◗ A 4-year-old filly, Found seems to thrive on activity. The BC Turf will be her 10th start of the year. Last year, she had eight starts, ending with a win in the BC Turf at Keeneland.

◗ Ryan Moore rides Found, who is most effective racing from off the pace. The BC Turf will be her eighth consecutive appearance in a Grade 1 or Group 1 race.

Breeders' Cup Mile: Tepin has work cut out for her in repeat bid

Emily Shields
Tepin comes into Breeders' Cup Mile off her first loss of 2016, as she tries to repeat last year's win.

ARCADIA, Calif. – You hear a lot about the multiple Breeders’ Cup Mile winners: Miesque in 1988, Lure in ’93, Da Hoss in ’98 after his win in ’96, Goldikova in 2009 and 2010, Wise Dan in 2013.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies: Baffert has one-two punch

Emily Shields
American Gal, ridden by Mike Smith, zips a half-mile in 46.43 seconds on Tuesday at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The $2 million Juvenile Fillies launches the Saturday slate of Breeders’ Cup races at Santa Anita – just as it has launched so many great fillies into racing lore.

From what seems to be an extremely well-matched field of 12, perhaps there will be a filly to go on to match the feats of such greats as Open Mind, Go for Wand, Silverbulletday, Storm Flag Flying, Beholder, Songbird, and all the others who have used the Juvenile Fillies as a stepping-stone to stardom.

Breeders' Cup Turf: Found primed for repeat win

Debra A. Roma
Found is aiming to become the first horse to repeat in the Breeders' Cup Turf since Conduit did it in 2008-09.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Autumn is the right time of year for Found, the only filly in Saturday’s $4 million Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita.

In 2015, Found won the BC Turf at Keeneland in her third start within a month. This year, Found is on the same campaign. She won the $5.6 million Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly Racecourse in France on Oct. 2 and was second in the Champion Stakes at Ascot on Oct. 15.

Breeders' Cup Classic: California Chrome poised to complete perfect season

Barbara D. Livingston
Arrogate went very easily in this five-furlong work Monday at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Before the year started, those associated with California Chrome mapped out an itinerary for 2016, and thus far, they’ve hit every planned stop, with nary a misstep. Victory in the San Pasqual. A pair of wins in Dubai, including the World Cup. Two wins at Del Mar, including the Pacific Classic. And, most recently, a victory in the Awesome Again.

Alan Sherman has been California Chrome's constant companion

Barbara D. Livingston
Alan Sherman, with California Chrome, plans on training a string at Keeneland next spring.

ARCADIA, Calif. – When California Chrome was sent by van from his home at Los Alamitos to Santa Anita last Sunday in advance of Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, it was Alan Sherman who rode with him and got him settled into his temporary quarters. When California Chrome spent two months in Dubai earlier this year, it was Alan Sherman who was there the entire time, overseeing the day-to-day care.

Breeders' Cup Sprint: Drefong gives Baffert shot to collect fifth victory

Barbara D. Livingston
Drefong posted 103 Beyers in his last two wins sprinting.

ARCADIA, Calif. - What began as a small but extremely talented lineup for the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Sprint has gotten even smaller since Monday’s post position draw, with the late defections of Lord Nelson and Joking making for a seven-horse field, the smallest in the history of the event.

Lord Nelson, who was declared Thursday due to an infected cut that required antibiotics, was expected to vie for favoritism in the $1.5 million Sprint with Masochistic. He was one of two starters trainer Bob Baffert had pointed to the race, along with the 3-year-old Drefong.

Klaravich Stables gets three shots at Breeders' Cup breakthrough

Barbara D. Livingston
Favorable Outcome (left) and Practical Joke are two of Klaravich Stables's Breeders' Cup entrants this year.

Seth Klarman is one of the most successful investors in the world, so much so that he’s earned the moniker “The Next Warren Buffett.” In racing, the stock of his Klaravich Stables also is on the rise and could potentially peak at this weekend’s Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita.

Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint: How will complex race with baker's dozen unfold?

Barbara D. Livingston
By the Moon works four furlongs in 50.60 seconds Monday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The $1 million Filly and Mare Sprint usually is held earlier on Breeders’ Cup Saturday, but with such a competitive renewal on tap this year, the seven-furlong race has been spotted late in the program as a key link in all the huge multiple-race wagers.
