Bal a Bali looking to get fit for Breeders' Cup Mile

Benoit & Associates
Bal a Bali paid $8.20 in winning the Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Bal a Bali, unraced since a sixth-place finish in the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile on Aug. 20, is likely to start in the Breeders’ Cup Mile on Nov. 4 at Del Mar.

But trainer Richard Mandella said last weekend that Bal a Bali faces a tight schedule to be in peak form for the $2 million grass race. Gaining a spot in the field is not an issue. Bal a Bali earned a fees-paid berth with his win in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita in June.

Champagne Room wins the $200,000 Remington Park Oaks at Remington Park.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Friday was another busy morning for Breeders’ Cup candidates at Santa Anita. For the next two weeks, it will stay that way.

“They’ll get a chance to gallop over the [Del Mar] track Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday” during Breeders’ Cup week, trainer Peter Eurton said Friday after Champagne Room worked a bullet half-mile at Santa Anita.

Newmarket's Fillies Mile may offer Breeders' Cup clues

The Group 1 Fillies Mile on Friday at Newmarket could offer some clues for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf next month at Del Mar.

It also offers trainer Aidan O’Brien another chance to creep closer to Bobby Frankel’s record 25 Group or Grade 1 stakes victories in a calendar year. As of Wednesday, O’Brien had 23 such wins, and in the Fillies Mile, for 2-year-old fillies, he has the three top antepost betting choices in Happily, Magical, and September.
