Pavel, winner of the Grade 1 Stephen Foster last time out, is gearing up for a 1 1/4-mile test in the Pacific Classic.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Pavel, the winner of the Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs in June and second in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Aug. 18, is in the midst of a two-week break at a local farm.

Trainer Doug O’Neill said on Friday that Pavel remains a contender for the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs on Nov. 3 and will not have a start in the interim.

“We’re giving him a little break at the farm, and I’m thinking of training him up to the Breeders’ Cup,” O’Neill said.

Gunnevera primed but facing jumbo field in Woodward

Barbara D. Livingston
Gunnevera trains Wednesday morning at Saratoga. He is the favorite in a 14-horse field for the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – In the older male dirt division, there’s Accelerate, there’s Diversify, and there’s everybody else. Neither Accelerate nor Diversify is running in Saturday’s $750,000 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga, leaving the Grade 1 race with a full field of everybody else.

A super-sized field of 14 older horses – who have combined to win three graded stakes this year, including one on turf – is entered to run 1 1/8 miles in the Woodward, some hoping to fuel dreams of a bid in the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 3 at Churchill Downs.

Catalina Cruiser paid $2.40 with his win in the Pat O'Brien Stakes.

DEL MAR, Calif. – The undefeated and untested Catalina Cruiser is unlikely to race again until the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Churchill Downs on Nov. 3 following his comprehensive win in Saturday’s Grade 2 Pat O’Brien Stakes at Del Mar.

Trainer John Sadler said on Sunday that a 10-week gap between races could work in favor of Catalina Cruiser, who will leave the Del Mar summer meeting as a two-time stakes winner.

“With him, I could wait,” Sadler said. “He runs so well fresh.”

Abel Tasman (right) narrowly beats Elate in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign on Saturday.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Those looking forward to another meeting between Abel Tasman and Elate in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff could be disappointed.

Elate, beaten a head by Abel Tasman in Saturday’s controversial running of the Grade 1 Personal Ensign, could be pointed to the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic and not the $2 million Distaff, trainer Bill Mott said Sunday. Both races are at Churchill Downs on Nov. 3.

“They might have to put her in the Classic to meet us,” Mott said.

Barbara D. Livingston
Luis Saez guided Promises Fulfilled to a front-running victory in Saturday's Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Stakes.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Dale Romans has a problem on his hands, a problem any of his colleagues would love to have: how to separate the wealth of talented 3-year-olds in his barn, including Promises Fulfilled and Seven Trumpets, the one-two finishers in Saturday’s Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial; King Zachary, the fourth-place finisher in the Grade 1 Travers; and West Virginia Derby winner Mr Freeze, who awaits Romans’s return to Churchill Downs at the end of the Saratoga meet.

Whitmore to stick to sprinting for now, target Phoenix Stakes

Debra A. Roma
Whitmore (3) paid $19.60 in winning the Forego on Saturday.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Whitmore's victory in the $600,000 Forego at Saratoga on Saturday was trainer Ron Moquett’s second win in a Grade 1. In 2006, he won the Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs with 90-1 Seek Gold.

Robert LaPenta, co-owner of Travers winner Catholic Boy, has been involved in both of Moquett’s Grade 1 scores. He sold Seek Gold to Moquett just prior to the Foster. Now, Moquett has returned the favor. He sold a partial interest in Whitmore to LaPenta following the gelding’s debut victory in 2015.

Catholic Boy likely back to turf for final Breeders' Cup Classic prep

Barbara D. Livingston
Catholic Boy, shown Sunday with trainer Jonathan Thomas, earned a career-best 104 Beyer Speed Figure in winning the Travers Stakes on Saturday.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The top three finishers from Saturday’s Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes are expected to go their separate ways for the immediate future, but if things go according to plan, all three could meet again in the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs on Nov. 3, their connections indicated Sunday.

Catholic Boy, who won the Travers by four lengths and earned a 104 Beyer Speed Figure, “came back really well,” according to trainer Jonathan Thomas.
