Cool Kiss searches for racing luck; mandatory payout in Jackpot Hi 5

Michael Burns
Once on the King's Plate trail, Cool Kiss headlines Sunday's feature at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Cool Kiss had to settle for second behind his more fancied stablemate Stanley House when they clashed May 17 at Woodbine.

Stanley House is moving on to the Grade 3 Dominion Day on June 29, while Cool Kiss contests another conditioned allowance route at 1 1/16 miles with a $50,000 claiming option on Sunday, the finale on a 10-race card.

There will be added interest on the 13-horse feature, in which there’s a mandatory payout on the Jackpot Hi 5 with a carryover of $347,853.

Papa's Golden Boy, Slew's Tiz Whiz continue rivalry in Budweiser Stakes

Reed Palmer/Emerald Downs
Slew's Tiz Whiz was rolling late in his seasonal debut and may be sharper Saturday.

Slew’s Tiz Whiz and Papa’s Golden Boy will renew their local rivalry for the seventh time in Sunday’s $50,000 Budweiser Stakes over six furlongs at Emerald Downs. The pair were prominent in the Emerald stakes ranks in 2022 before Papa’s Golden Boy was sidelined late in the year and then missed all of 2023.

The pair met in their 2024 debuts, a June 2 allowance race, with Papa’s Golden Boy putting on a memorable exhibition. The Vince Gibson trainee was well restrained away from the gate before accelerating to a clear lead and then holding on to win by a length on a sloppy surface.

Ward saddles Navy Seal for North American debut in Canterbury Derby

Coady Media
Arrest Me Red is a Grade 2 winner and is approaching millionaire status heading into Saturday's overnight handicap at Canterbury.

The $50,000 Canterbury Derby on Saturday night’s Northern Stars Turf Festival at Canterbury Park will feature trainer Wesley Ward and jockey David Flores, and an old friend in jockey Luis Quinonez.

There also could be an uninvited guest – rain.

The forecast for the card of three $50,000 stakes and two $40,000 overnight handicaps was a 95 percent chance of rain. It would cap what is expected to be a week of wet weather. The high for Saturday is 78 degrees. First post is 5:10 p.m. Central.

Goldwood Stakes provides challenge to handicappers

Coady Media
All That Magic, trained by Kathleen DeMasi, is 3 for 3 over the Monmouth Park turf course.

A week after the Get Serious, a Monmouth Park turf-sprint stakes for older males, drew a surprisingly salty bunch, the Goldwood, a turf sprint for older fillies and mares, came up a seriously challenging race.

The Goldwood, carded for 5 1/2 furlongs, drew an overflow field of a dozen 4- and 5-year-olds. Ten horses can start, leaving no-hoper Velikiy and longshot Queen Karima as also-eligibles. Among the 10 in the race’s main body, it’s difficult even to say who will be favored.

Macanga's connections confident coming into Wild Applause

Curlin's Girl wins maiden at GP March 24 2024

Curlin’s Girl ended up on the lead and then tired in her last start but can be expected to settle off the pace on Saturday.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Macanga was so impressive winning an allowance race in her first start after being transferred to Rick Dutrow’s barn earlier this spring that her trainer was ready to jump her right into the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational on July 6. But after discussing it with the filly’s connections, as well as getting some input from jockey John Velazquez, Dutrow ultimately opted to take the more conservative route and entered Macanga in Saturday’s $150,000 Wild Applause Stakes at Aqueduct.

Weekend GamePlan: Picks for Ohio Derby, Wild Applause, Goldwood

Batten Down works at SAR June 3 2024
Barbara D. Livingston
Batten Down, a Juddmonte homebred by Tapit out of Close Hatches, is coming off a strong maiden win that netted a 93 Beyer Speed Figure.

Here’s the thing with morning lines. If you want to tell habitual bad-line critics (raises hand) to shut up, it’s hardly worth mentioning, that’s fine. If unimportant, why bother doing it? Just ditch the line. Because making a line that radically diverges from the betting market is bad business. When a horse listed at 8-1 pays his backer $7, a novice horseplayer will more likely head for the exit than back to the betting window.

Cowboy Mike's connections take big gamble in Bertrando

Benoit Photo
Cowboy Mike was supplemented into the Golden State Series, which includes Saturday's Bertrando at Los Alamitos Racecourse.

There has already been a major bet associated with Cowboy Mike’s appearance in Saturday’s $100,000 Bertrando Stakes for California-bred milers on the opening day of the Los Alamitos summer meeting.

Earlier this week, Cowboy Mike was supplemented to the Golden State Series of stakes for statebreds for $25,000, a prerequisite for a start in the Betrando. The expensive fee makes the 4-year-old Cowboy Mike eligible for the statewide series for the remainder of his career.

“We took a gamble,” trainer Bob Baffert said.

Wide-open Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes closes out Royal Ascot

Benoit Photo
Missed the Cut, trained by John Sadler, has been pointed to the Hardwicke Stakes since he won the San Marcos (above) in March. The firm ground at Ascot helps his chances.

There will not be a strong favorite among the 14 runners in Saturday’s Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, the final top-level race of the famous five-day racing festival in England.

Instead, the $1.26 million Jubilee Stakes is a fantastic betting race, with several runners capable of capturing the richest sprint prize of the week on a straightaway course.

Ascendancy returns for repeat bid in She's a Tiger

Ronnie Wackerly/Vassar Photography
Ascendancy returns to Pleasanton Saturday to defend her title in the She's a Tiger Stakes.

Ascendancy has seemingly been everywhere in the 12 months since she won her first stakes in the She’s a Tiger Stakes at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton last June.

The 5-year-old mare has raced at six tracks in as many starts. The highlights were a win in the Luther Burbank Stakes at Santa Rosa last August and a third in the Grade 3 Wilshire Stakes at Santa Anita in April.

Ascendancy is back at Pleasanton for Saturday’s $50,000 She’s a Tiger Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles after an unsuccessful and ambitious campaign at Eastern tracks in May.
