Castleton Lyons Farm plans to downsize in the near future, having filed plans to subdivide more than 1,000 acres of its Lexington, Ky., property.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Post time for Thursday’s Woodbine card has been pushed back to 6:05 p.m. Eastern due to an extreme heat warning for the Toronto area. With a tightener under her girth, Royal Blush could be ready to fire one of her better shots in the featured nonwinners-of-three turf sprint for Ontario-sired allowance types and $40,000 claimers.
The complexion of the inaugural Grade 1, $150,000 Beverly Steinman Hurdle Handicap changed significantly with an 11-day postponement. Abaan, the presumptive favorite, did not re-enter the race, while two new players joined the field for the 2 3/8-mile hurdle over National fences rescheduled for Thursday at Aqueduct.
Originally scheduled for June 9 at Saratoga, the Steinman was canceled that day due to heavy rains that forced all other scheduled flat turf races to be run on dirt.
Get out the top hats and tails: Royal Ascot 2024 is upon us.
The five-day Royal meeting at venerable Ascot Racecourse launches, as usual, on a Tuesday, a daily morning treat for American racing fans through Saturday’s closing card.
The meeting begins with a bang, opening with the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes run over a straight mile. The Tuesday card, the week’s best, features two other Group 1s, the King Charles III (formerly the King’s Stand), a five-furlong sprint; and the St. James’s Palace Stakes, a one-turn mile for 3-year-olds.
One might easily come away with the idea that while Tamfana finished fourth in the 1000 Guineas last month at Newmarket, she was the best horse in the race. Her overall form combined with her last-start performance has Tamfana near the head of early betting markets for the Group 1 Prix de Diane, also known as the French Oaks, on Sunday at Chantilly Racecourse.
The 6-year-old Illinois-bred mare Katie M’lady hasn’t run since August, and when she returns to action Sunday at Hawthorne, it will be in a race named after her.
Yes, Katie M’lady is one of six Illinois-bred fillies and mares in the one-mile $75,000 Katie M’lady Handicap on the Hawthorne turf. The mare’s long layoff has come about due to the lack of suitable racing, and trainer Michele Boyce said it was never the plan to retire Katie M’lady to become a broodmare.
OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer Tom Morley blamed himself, in part, for The Big Torpedo getting run down late by the formidable Good Lord Lorrie when venturing outside New York-bred company for the first time in the Woodhaven Stakes. But there should be no excuses necessary Sunday at Aqueduct when The Big Torpedo returns against New York-sired company as the solid favorite in the $150,000 Spectacular Bid, a six-furlong turf race for 3-year-olds.
Jorge Duarte Jr. and Richard Santulli’s Colts Neck Farm won a turf-sprint stakes June 8 at Churchill Downs, and on Sunday, much closer to home at Monmouth Park, they can win another.
Grooms All Bizness ran the best race to that point of his career winning the Get Serious Stakes a year ago at Mommouth and based on his long-layoff comeback run last month in the Jim McKay Turf Sprint at Pimlico, Grooms All Bizness has returned for his 5-year-old season a faster racehorse.
Horseplayers tackling Gulfstream Park on Sunday will have to handicap not only the races but the weather. The significant rain that forced cancellations earlier in the week could impact the surfaces over which the card’s pair of first-level allowance features will be conducted.
The fourth race is carded for fillies and mares at a mile on turf, but could move to Tapeta in the event additional rain hits as predicted. And if it’s moved to the synthetic track, the race will be run at a mile and 70 yards.
Up to Party was a bargain purchase as a $12,000 yearling last fall.
She may look even more like a steal if she runs to expectations in Sunday’s $1,010,000 Ed Burke Million Futurity at Los Alamitos. The winner’s share is $407,400.
In a field of 10, Up to Party is the lone filly and has the role of fastest qualifier from 12 time trials on May 26. That evening she zipped 350 yards in 17.58 seconds to remain unbeaten after two starts.
