Santana ready to floor it on Skelly as he approaches milestone

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. tools around town in a practical kind of vehicle when wintering at Oaklawn Park, but on Friday his ride gets an upgrade to full-on race car.

Santana will be teaming with Skelly in the ninth race, an allowance sprint that marks the 6-year-old debut of the horse who regularly runs opening half-miles in 44 seconds and tends to cover six furlongs in just more than 1:08.

“He’s fast,” Santana said. “It feels like you are sitting in a Ferrari and pushing the gas.”

Dutrow keeps Outsource at mile for now

Eventually wanting to stretch out Outsource, trainer Rick Dutrow will keep him at a mile in Friday's feature at Aqueduct.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer Rick Dutrow believes the best of his New York-bred 3-year-old Outsource will be seen when he’s able to get him out farther in distance. For now, however, Dutrow will have to be content running him at one mile against a modest group in Friday’s featured first-level allowance/optional $80,000 claimer at Aqueduct.

Outsource, a son of Honor A. P., is coming off a 1 1/2-length victory in a one-mile maiden race for New York-breds on March 2. He didn’t run particularly fast but he grinded out the win, his first in four starts.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – When Hit Show turned for home with a decent position this past Saturday in the Dubai World Cup, his trainer, Brad Cox, was watching from Kentucky. Good, Cox thought, the horse will grind his way to a rich placing.

Hit Show, previously only a Grade 2 winner, did more than that, hitting a gear Cox didn’t know he had to run down Mixto and win the $12 million World Cup.

“He’s never run like that before,” Cox said Sunday at Keeneland.
