LEXINGTON, Ky. – One does not expect to see a million-dollar auction buy show up in the middle of March to launch his racing career in Virginia. Until this winter, in fact, one wouldn’t have expected any Thoroughbred ready to race show up in Virginia that time of year.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A pair of allowance events offering six-figure purses for fillies and mares – one routing on dirt and one sprinting on turf – are the nominal features on Thursday’s nine-race card at Keeneland.

The first one to come up in the program is the seventh race, a $120,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles on dirt for fillies and mares 4 years old and up who have never won a race other-than or who have never won two races. The race is well matched at the top as Sudden Switch and Crazy Cami both earned Beyer Speed Figures of 78 in their last starts and Into Amore earned a 77.

Trainer Tom Morley has a couple of fast 3-year-olds that he wants to run at six furlongs, which is why he will likely have look out of town for next starts for One Nine Hundred and Paula’s a Star.

One Nine Hundred, a seven-length maiden winner on March 29 at Aqueduct, will likely be pointed to the $150,000 Chick Lang Stakes at Laurel Park on May 17. Paula’s a Star, third against males in the Jimmy Winkfield Stakes at Aqueduct, will be aimed at the Grade 3, $150,000 Miss Preakness Stakes on May 16.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Bernieandtherose, a New York-bred 3-year-old filly who has won four straight, including a pair of stakes, was forced to miss Saturday’s Grade 3, $200,000 Gazelle Stakes due to a cough, trainer Dominick Schettino said.

On March 28, Bernieandtherose worked five furlongs in 1:00.40 at Belmont Park, but shortly thereafter started to cough. Schettino, not wanting to take any chances, decided to not even enter.

“She’s fine, didn’t have to miss any training, just had to pass it,” Schettino said. “It’s a long year.”

Heroic Move has run some notable races in New Mexico and is returning to the state Sunday to be part of the field for the $200,000 Sunland Park Stakes.

The 1 1/8-mile race that was previously run as a handicap is one of three stakes that help close the meet. It will share a card with the $125,000 Mine That Bird Derby and the $90,000 New Mexico State University that drew Corrina Corrina, the all-time richest New Mexico-bred Thoroughbred.

Sunland is showcasing the stakes on a 12-race card that begins at 12:25 p.m. Mountain.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Hill Road, who had to scratch from Saturday’s Grade 2 Wood Memorial due to a fever, will remain in consideration for several spots, including the Kentucky Derby, depending on how quickly he rebounds, trainer Chad Brown said Friday.
