Universal Payday took advantage of a fast and contested pace when he rolled to an easy win in a first-level allowance with a $20,000 claiming option for Florida-breds at Gulfstream Park March 30. The same scenario could unfold when he runs in a $20,000 starter race with a $32,000 claiming option at Gulfstream Friday. The one-mile race for 3-year-olds and up drew six horses and will be contested over what should be a fast main track. It goes as race 6 on an eight-race card that begins at 12:50 p.m. Eastern. Universal Payday was making his second start for trainer Fernando Abreu when he romped over a track rated fast that appeared sealed and had a lot of water sitting on it March 30. Acting on behalf of Daniel L. Walters, trainer Rohan Crichton claimed the 7-year-old son of To Honor and Serve. Crichton has been sharp in picking out horses lately, winning right back with four of the last six horses he claimed. Universal Payday went into the race off a solid effort where he rallied into a moderate pace to finish third at this level going seven furlongs March 8. He should have plenty of speed to run at in this spot and could get up in time if things fall his way. :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! American Prince is the main threat. Trained by Elizabeth Dobles, the 5-year-old Kentucky-bred horse by Liam’s Map will appreciate the easier company after a dull effort in a conditioned allowance race that carried a $62,500 claiming option April 9. He never got involved in the seven-furlong dash won by Starship Renegade. In his previous race American Prince forced an honest pace on his way to victory in a first-level allowance Feb. 25. American Prince should get a similar trip and will have an edge over Universal Payday if the track is favoring speed and the front-runners don’t get carried away up front. He will break from post 5 with Leonel Reyes riding. The Peter Walder-trained Slim Slow Slider was wearing blinkers when he came up empty after setting a fast pace going this distance in a first-level allowance race April 1. He was not wearing blinkers when he sat just off the speed on his way to a victory at seven furlongs in a first-level allowance for Florida-breds in his previous start and he will not be wearing them Friday. The 4-year-old son of Vancouver will break from post 2 with Miguel Vasquez up. Septemberten, a seven-time winner with $285,845 in earnings, could be dangerous off the claim by Crichton. Nature Boy, who is coming off a front-running win in a $6,250 conditioned claimer going 6 1/2 furlongs for trainer Herold Simms, will try to take them as far as he will go. Both of his wins have come in sprints, so it remains to be seen if he can go this far. Sha Tin, trained by Patrick Biancone, is stepping up significantly after winning a $12,500 maiden claimer March 29. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
