Turfway Park plans to resume racing on Wednesday for the first time since Jan. 22, with modified post times to avoid the worst of the ongoing winter cold. As of an announcement made Tuesday morning, prior to light snow expected later in the day, Turfway was scheduled to kick off a normal four-day race week with Wednesday and Thursday cards that will have a first post of 1 p.m. Post time for most cards during this Turfway meet is 5:55 p.m., but there are single-digit wind chills forecast during the evening hours, prompting the move. At this point, post time is still scheduled for 5:55 for the Friday card, featuring the $125,000 Wishing Well Stakes for female sprinters, a third attempt at running the rescheduled race. Saturday’s card, also with a first post of 5:55, features the $125,000 Valdale Stakes for 3-year-old fillies sprinting. Wednesday will mark the first day of live racing at Turfway Park since a winter storm and sub-zero temperatures forced the cancellation of six consecutive cards. The track maintenance crew was finally able to clear the Tapeta racing surface Sunday, allowing training to resume Monday morning. The track told horsemen that training hours may be modified on Wednesday and Thursday to allow time to prepare the track for the earlier first post. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Pick six carryover  A pick six jackpot carryover of $399,081 survived the last live racing card and will be there to chase Wednesday afternoon in races 5 through 10. The sequence consists, in order, of a maiden claiming race for 3-year-olds, an auction-restricted maiden special weight for 3-year-olds, two claiming races for older horses, an allowance, and another sophomore maiden claiming race. The allowance, with a purse of $104,000 for 4-year-olds and up who have never won twice other than or who have never won three races, poses an interesting question with its 1 1/4-mile distance. In the field of 12 for race 9, Big to Do is the only winner at the distance in the United States, that victory coming at Turfway a year ago. In his most recent outing, he was a good third in a Turfway allowance, beaten less than a length by local stakes winner Baby Max. Happy Happy Day is a winner at this distance in his native Argentina. He was third in his only try at this distance in the U.S. and showed a decent affinity for Turfway when he was third here in December. Accredit also owns a placing in his only try at this distance, beaten half a length by graded stakes winner Verstappen in an allowance at Turfway in December 2024.  The choice on the morning line is Mutaawid, who ran successfully in routes on turf in 2025 after a claim, taking allowances at 1 3/8 miles, 1 1/2 miles, and 1 3/16 miles.   Siesta Key, a stakes winner on turf at Colonial back in 2024, is making his first start beyond 1 1/16 miles, but the Godolphin homebred’s pedigree suggests he can handle more. The son of classic sire Into Mischief is out of multiple Grade 1-winning router Cocoa Beach. Siesta Key is coming off a deceptively strong effort at Turfway. There, he was fourth in a mile allowance but beaten just a head, and he earned an 87 Beyer Speed Figure.   In addition to the distance, pace could tell the story of this race. Curly Larry and Mo, breaking from the inside, seems a likely candidate to show the way, but, at 30-1 on the morning line, he appears outclassed. Mutaawid and Happy Happy Day will both want targets to close at, making them vulnerable behind what should be a moderate tempo. Big to Do has shown some versatility in his style, and Accredit and Siesta Key are both stalking types who could take initiative. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
