Mother Nature continued her winning streak at Turfway Park, as the track canceled its Wednesday card, the seventh consecutive live racing day lost to ongoing winter conditions. Turfway has not raced since Jan. 22, as a major winter storm across Kentucky was followed by dangerously-frigid temperatures that made it impossible to clear snow and ice from the track. Turfway was able to clear the track for the resumption of training on Monday, and shifted first post for the Wednesday and Thursday evening cards up to 1 p.m. to beat the frigid evening temperatures. However, a band of snow rolled through Kentucky on Tuesday evening, and the temperature in Florence was 26 degrees, with a wind chill “real feel” of 15 degrees at noon on Wednesday, a few minutes after the day’s cancellation notice was sent out. Racing is now scheduled to resume on Thursday at 1 p.m. At this point, post time is still scheduled for 5:55 p.m. for the Friday card, featuring the $125,000 Wishing Well Stakes for female sprinters, a third attempt at running the rescheduled race. Saturday’s card, also with a first post of 5:55 p.m., features the $125,000 Valdale Stakes for 3-year-old fillies sprinting. A pick six jackpot carryover of $399,081 survives into the resumption of racing. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
