HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Although they won’t turn 3 for another week, a trio of locally based juveniles are already being pointed to the traditional Kentucky Derby preps to be decided here this winter, a group that includes the Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained pair of Make It Big and White Abarrio along with trainer Dale Romans’s Giant Game, who capped his 2-year-old campaign with a third-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Make It Big earned 10 Kentucky Derby qualifying points and remained undefeated in the process after shipping to Remington Park to register a half-length victory in last Friday’s Springboard Mile. The win was the third in as many starts for the son of Neolithic, who earned a career-best 84 Beyer Speed Figure. “We are obviously very excited. He was stepping up in class, shipping for the first time, and going around two turns for the first time. He handled it all as well as we can ask for,” said Joseph, who trains Make It Big for Red Oak Stable. “He sat in the pocket, made a move down the backside, and was gutsy enough to hold off Osbourne.” Make It Big was ridden to victory by Jose Ortiz, deputizing for regular rider Edgard Zayas, who underwent shoulder surgery four days before the race. “I want to give credit to Edgard,” Joseph said. “He was going there to ride him, but then the shoulder surgery came up. Edgard was going to have surgery on a Monday and still came out to work him on Sunday, showing the class and work ethic that he has. He’s a big part of the team and he’s a big part of this horse’s success.” Joseph said distance shouldn’t be an issue for Make It Big as he moves forward. “You would think the more distance the better, that’s how he trained even six weeks before he made his debut, like he wanted to go long, long, long,” Joseph said. Joseph said the Grade 3 Holy Bull on Feb. 5 might come up a bit quick for Make It Big’s return, noting the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth on March 5 might be the more likely option. Both the Holy Bull and Fountain of Youth will be decided at 1 1/16 miles. White Abarrio was a runaway winner of his first two career starts during the fall meet before shipping to Churchill Downs to finish third behind top Derby prospects Smile Happy and Classic Causeway in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club, fighting back to gain the show award after prompting the early pace under Zayas in his two-turn bow. White Abarrio had his first work since that race over a good track here Sunday, coasting a very easy three-eighths in 35.94 seconds. “He’s doing well,” Joseph noted. “We gave him a little freshening. He’s most likely going in the Holy Bull.” Giant Game breezed four furlongs from the half-mile pole in 50.11 before galloping out five-eighths in 1:02.63 late Monday morning. It was his first official work since finishing 3 1/4 lengths behind Corniche in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Giant Game was one of 10 horses Romans worked over the fast track on Monday, the majority of them 2-year-olds, including another potential Derby prospect, Grade 3-placed Red Knobs. ◗ Wednesday’s 10-race program kicks off an abbreviated four-day race week with Saturday, Christmas Day, the lone dark day through the weekend. The Wednesday card consists of seven races on the Tapeta surface, with only two on the main course and one on turf. The main event is a modest $25,000 starter allowance with a $37,000 purse at a mile and 70 yards on the synthetic surface that lured a field of nine led Flying Black, one of four members of the field with a win over the course, and four-time turf winner Act Like Art.
