Sunbird will attempt to make amends in Saturday’s $50,000 S.W. Randall Plate over 1 1/8 miles at Hastings. The 4-year-old son of Orb, trained by Terry Jordan, finished a troubled-trip second last out as the 6-5 favorite in the B.C. Cup Classic on Aug. 5. The narrow runner-up in last year’s B.C. Derby could be said to be due for some luck. In his penultimate start, Sunbird lost the Lieutenant Governor’s by a nose, and he lost a May 18 allowance by a head. In six Hastings route attempts, the gelding has lost by no more than a length, with three wins among them. The Randall Plate is a remarkably competitive affair, with five in the field of seven being stakes winners. Phantom Ride, who is looking for his first stakes win, ships in off a sixth-place finish in the Longacres Mile on Aug. 11 at Emerald Downs. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! The colt worked five furlongs on July 25 at Hastings and then entered the Longacres Mile, where he was bumped a few times in the early going and then checked in 11 3/4 lengths behind winner Five Star General. At Attention and Apprehend, both trained by Barbara Heads, come out of separate races on Aug. 24 at Century Mile. Apprehend won an allowance race by 3 1/2 lengths with a 75 Beyer Speed Figure. At Attention squared off with Space, who’s entered here and bested Sunbird by a length in the B.C. Cup Classic, in the 1 1/4-mile Speed to Spare Championship at Century Mile, an oddly run race where after the first half-mile five runners were head to head for the lead. Space dueled up front and retreated to last, beaten 26 1/4 lengths. At Attention raced three lengths off the lead for most of the race but then lost ground on the final turn and finished third, beaten 1 1/4 lengths. “He came back good and just easy training since [the Randall Plate] came up so soon,” Heads said of At Attention. Others in the field include Lucky Force, trained by Craig MacPherson, and Settecento, trained by David Milburn. Sharing billing with the Randall Plate is the Delta Colleen for fillies and mares going 1 1/16 miles. Infinite Patience, also trained by Heads, won the Northlands Distaff at Century Mile for the fourth consecutive year last out. Included among those was the 2022 rendition in which the mare set the track record of 1:33.65, which was among the fastest two-turn miles ever recorded on dirt by a filly or mare. “Infinite Patience had an easy trip and came out of her race sharp. She is a really good traveler, which helps,” Heads said. Among the opposition is Matsqui, trained by Mark Freeman. She is the only horse to have ever defeated Infinite Patience in 15 starts going one mile or longer on dirt. Five others are entered. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
