OPELOUSAS, La. – Saturday’s rescheduled Evangeline Mile drew the original eight cast members plus two new shooters for the meeting’s biggest race in the handicap division. The $100,000 Mile was one of five stakes lost last Saturday when torrential rains washed out the bulk of the Evangeline Turf Sprint program. The Mile will go as the eighth race on an expanded 11-race card that also includes the Lafayette and Acadiana stakes for Louisiana-bred 3-year-olds and 3-year-old fillies, respectively, looking for their first stakes victory. Those two events were rescheduled from last week as well. The $300,000 Turf Sprint itself and the $100,000 Opelousas Stakes for fillies and mares on grass will be rescheduled later. King Council and Four Leaf Chief add additional intrigue to what already was a compelling betting affair. The quick King Council, a wire-to-wire optional-claiming winner at Lone Star in his most recent start, joins an already-busy pace picture, while Four Leaf Chief is a member of the minority in the Mile who figure to do their best running late. :: Bet the Evangeline Mile with DRF Bets. KEY CONTENDERS Stormdriver (Last 3 Beyers: 96-87-77) ◗ He has thrived since coming under trainer Pat Devereux’s care and rallied impressively from off the pace to win the John Henry Stakes in his last start. The resulting 96 Beyer Speed Figure is better than what anyone else in here has thrown all year. ◗ He has trained very well between starts and keeps multiple local riding champ Diego Saenz, who has ridden him to both wins since the barn change. Mystery Train (Last 3 Beyers: 75-94-0) ◗ Last seen setting the pace in the Grade 3 Precisionist at Santa Anita, he represents the class of the field, although he is not likely to get a lonesome lead early with other quality speed present. “There does seem to be some speed in there,” trainer Darrell Vienna said last week. “I see us on or just off it early.” Only in America (Last 3 Beyers: 93-76-87) ◗ Purchased privately since his win at Keeneland last October, he adds Lasix for his first start in Louisiana. He has been training steadily for his top-shelf connections, including a quick 1:11.60 gate work last month. Louisiana Downs’s leading rider, Richard Eramia, journeys in to ride. Ide Be Cool (Last 3 Beyers: 91-76-80) ◗ The 2013 Louisiana-bred of the Year got back on track last time, winning a sprint at Louisiana Downs despite stumbling at the start. His task promises to be more difficult Saturday, especially with his outside post.
