ELMONT, N.Y. - Four champions, a West Coast freak taking on an East Coast beast, and an undefeated 3-year-old who might be one of the division’s elite, are among the talent that will be on display before the 154th running of the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes on Saturday at Belmont Park. The 13-race card includes eight Grade 1 races, plus the Grade 2 Brooklyn Handicap. First post is 11:20 a.m. Four of the Grade 1 stakes have only five-horse fields, but some of that has to do with the elite talent in those races. The marquee undercard event is the Grade 1, $1 million Metropolitan Handicap, which features the undefeated Southern California colt Flightline taking on Speaker’s Corner, a three-time graded stakes winner this year. The Met Mile only attracted five, including Aloha West, the Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner; Happy Saver, the 2020 Jockey Club Gold Cup winner; and Informative, who did upset the 2021 Salvator Mile at 79-1. Flightline, making his first start since winning the Grade 1 Malibu on Dec. 26 drew post 1 and will be ridden by Flavien Prat. Speaker’s Corner, the Grade 1 Carter winner, drew post 2 and will be piloted by Junior Alvarado. Aloha West drew post 3 followed by Happy Saver and Informative. :: Get Belmont Stakes Day Betting Strategies for exclusive wager recommendations, contender profiles, and more. The Met Mile, which offers a fees-paid berth into the BC Dirt Mile on Nov. 5 at Keeneland, is one of three Win and You’re In races for the Breeders’ Cup. The Grade 1, $500,000 Ogden Phipps offers a free-berth into the BC Distaff. The Phipps, a one-turn, 1 1/16-mile race, features a meeting between Letruska, who won this race last year en route to an Eclipse Award as the North America’s top older female, and Malathaat, last year’s 3-year-old filly champion. Letruska, 10th in last year’s Breeders’ Cup, is 2 for 2 this year with a victory in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom, while Malathaat came off the layoff following her third in the BC Distaff to win the Grade 2 Doubledogdare at Keeneland. Letruska drew the rail followed by Bonny South, Malathaat, Clairiere, last year’s Grade 1 Cotillion winner, and Search Results, last year’s Grade 1 Acorn victor. Echo Zulu, last year’s champion 2-year-old filly, will be heavily favored in the Grade 1, $500,000 Acorn for 3-year-old fillies going one mile. Echo Zulu, who drew post 5, is a three-time Grade 1 winner, including the Frizette here last fall and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in November. Her sternest test figures to come from Matareya, a winner of three straight, including the Eight Belles at Churchill Downs on May 6. Matareya, trained by Brad Cox drew post 4. Dream Lith (rail), Inventing, and Divine Huntress complete the field. Jack Christopher, arguably the most exciting 3-year-old on the card, looms a short-priced favorite in the Grade 1, $400,000 Woody Stephens at seven furlongs, which drew a field of six. Jack Christopher won the Grade 1 Champagne here last fall and, after an injury knocked him out of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, he made a successful seasonal debut in the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile at Churchill Downs on May 7. Jack Christopher drew the rail. Outside of him are Pappacap, Wit, Morello, Chasing Time, and Provocateur. Trainer Chad Brown looks to have a stranglehold on the Grade 1, $500,000 Just a Game with the trio of Speak of the Devil, Regal Glory, and In Italian. Speak of the Devil was devastating winning the Grade 2 Distaff Turf Mile in her U.S. debut at Churchill Downs. Regal Gory is 11 for 18, though two of her losses have come in this race, finishing fourth the last two years. In Italian was second to Speak of the Devil in the Distaff Turf Mile.
