Khaled Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms has bred or raced way more than its fair share of great racehorses over the last 40 years, but by far the best sire Juddmonte has produced is Danehill. Bred by Juddmonte in Kentucky by the great Danzig out of Razyana, by His Majesty, Danehill possessed a classic “stallion’s pedigree” since he was inbred 3x3 to Northern Dancer’s dam Natalma. Northern Dancer himself was Danzig’s sire and Razyana’s dam Spring Adieu was Northern Dancer’s half-sister by Buckpasser. Danehill validated that pedigree by winning the Group 1 Ladbroke Sprint and running third in the 2000 Guineas, prompting his purchase for stud duty by Coolmore Stud. Though somewhat undervalued at first in Ireland, Danehill transformed the Australian breeding industry on his annual shuttle visits, leading the sire list eight times. Once his merit was revealed, Danehill also led the English sire list twice and the French list three times, siring a record total of 354 stakes winners. Danehill also established vibrant sire lines both in Australia and Europe, and, like many great sires, even his lesser sons sometimes threw off enduring sparks. Danehill’s son Danetime (out of Allegheny River, by Lear Fan), never won stakes, placing third in the Group 1 July Cup, but, given a modest opportunity in Ireland sired 32 stakes winners, including English and French highweight Bushranger (Danz Danz, by Efisio) and French highweight Myboycharlie (Dulceata, by Rousillon). :: DRF BREEDING LIVE: Real-time coverage of breeding and sales Like Danetime, Myboycharlie has proven an unexpected success at Haras du Mezeray in France and in Australia, and his daughter Sistercharlie won the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland on Saturday. Bred in Ireland by Denis Noonan, Myboycharlie won the first three of his four starts as a 2-year-old in 2007, beating champion filly Natagora easily in the Group 1 Prix Morny, before succumbing to champion New Approach in the National Stakes. Unplaced twice at 3 in Ireland, he won a mile allowance at Fair Grounds after being imported and ran fourth in the Woodchopper Stakes in his final start. From a speedy but unfashionable family, he has far exceeded expectations at stud, siring Australian champion Jameka (Mine Game, by General Nediym), Grade 1 Beverly D. winner Euro Charline (Eurolink Artemis, by Common Grounds), and Australian Group 1 winner Peggy Jean (Lady of Love, by Lago Delight). Bred in Ireland by Lucien Urano’s Ecurie de Monceaux, Sistercharlie is the first foal out of Starlet’s Sister, by Galileo, a full sister to Group 3 Prix Cleopatre winner Leo’s Starlet from a family the author has been fortunate to be associated with for more than 40 years. Sistercharlie’s fifth dam, Italian champion and classic winner Alea, by Galivanter, was the foundation mare for William duPont III’s French division at Haras de Victot during the 1980s when I was general manager of duPont’s Pillar Stud. Dam of English champion miler Noalcoholic, by Nonoalco, the best horse bred by duPont in France, Alea is also fourth dam of Preakness winner Red Bullet, by Unbridled. Noalcoholic’s half-sister by Lyphard’s miniature champion son Pharly, Alloy, won the Prix de Honfleur and Prix de la Calonne, and produced Fast Cure, by Cure the Blues, who won stakes in both France and California. Fast Cure’s full sister South Sea Blues is dam of Canadian champion Leonnatus Anteas, by Stormy Atlantic, and another full sister Metal Blues is dam of two stakes winners. :: Get breeding & sales news, Beyer info, and more delivered right to your email! Alloy’s daughter Allwaki, by Miswaki, was unraced, but is dam of Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks third Premier Creation, by Green Tune, whose daughter Anabaa’s Creation, by Anabaa, was one of the first mares the author purchased on behalf of St. Elias Stables owners Vincent and Teresa Viola. A stakes winner at 2 in France, Anabaa’s Creation was beaten only a head by the great Zenyatta in the Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes. Her first foal for the Violas was Chelsey Flower Stakes winner Create a Dream, by Oasis Dream. Premier Creation is also second dam of French listed winner Mary’s Precedent, by Storming Home, and third dam of Group 3 Prix de Lieurey winner Sandy’s Charm, by Footstepsinthesand. Sistercharlie won the Group 3 Prix Penelope last year in France and was narrowly beaten in both the Group 1 French Oaks and the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational on her only previous American start. Starlet’s Sister has since produced an unraced 3-year-old filly by Acclamation named My Sister Nat, a 2-year-old colt by Siyouni named Sottsass, and a yearling colt by Charm Spirit.
