SHAKOPEE, Minn. – The 21st Minnesota Festival of Champions Day on Sunday at Canterbury Park, while showcasing the best Minnesota-bred Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses, also will be the richest day of racing in Minnesota history for statebreds. The purses total more than $564,000. There will be six stakes for Thoroughbreds and two for Quarter Horses, plus three additional Thoroughbred turf races. Distaff Sprint (Race 4) The explosive 3-year-old Sky and Sea will be making her first attempt against older company Sunday, including the defending champion Somerset Swinger, in the $60,000 Minnesota Distaff Sprint Stakes at six furlongs. Sky and Sea will look to take the field gate to wire under Dean Butler but should be under pressure early from Happy Hour Honey. The multiple stakes winner Polar Plunge will be counting on some early speed to play to her closing style. Somerset Swinger should be lurking just off the early pace and will look to get first run at the leaders. Key contenders Polar Plunge (Last 3 Beyers: 80-69-74) * Opened her Canterbury season with a second in the Lady Slipper Stakes. * Has yet to win in 2014, going 0-1-2 in seven starts, but has sprinted only twice and tried turf once. * Has hit the board in 12 of 14 Canterbury dirt starts. Sky and Sea (Last 3 Beyers: 66-75-61) * Undefeated against Minnesota-breds. * Has not finished worse than second in six career starts. * Back sprinting after Minnesota Oaks victory at a mile and 70 yards. Somerset Swinger (Last 3 Beyers: 66-78-65) * Over the last five years, jockey Alex Canchari, when riding for trainer Mac Robertson, is winning at a 26 percent rate at Canterbury. * Defending champion scored at 5-1 last year. * Stalking trip could be perfect if a speed battle takes place up front. Sprint (Race 8) Opening the season in the 10,000 Lakes Stakes, Speakfromyourheart upset the heavily favored Heliskier and Bourbon County, closing hard to nip the front-running Bourbon County at the wire, with Heliskier tiring to third. Bourbon County will have company on the front end with the 3-year-olds Slippery Ice and Appeal to the King as well as Bing’s Magic possibly loosening up the morning-line favorite, making him susceptible to another late charge. Key contenders Bourbon County (Last 3 Beyers: 71-89-82) * Only Minnesota-bred loss came at the hands of Speakfromyourheart. * Changed his front-running style two back with a perfect stalking trip, taking an open allowance over Bing’s Magic. * Been on the bench since July 11. Trainer Bernell Rhone is clicking at 24 percent off a layoff of 31 to 60 days over the last six months at Canterbury, ahead of his overall win rate of 14 percent over the same time period at the track. Command the Land (Last 3 Beyers: 80-74-57) * Opened his season against statebreds with an off-the-pace win in an allowance for non-winners of two. * Stalking style may be perfect for the shape of the race. * Best last-race Beyer in the field. Heliskier (Last 3 Beyers: 65-84-71) * The two-time defending Canterbury Horse of the Year has yet to win in 2014. * Only statebred race in 2014 was a third in the 10,000 Lakes. * Defending Sprint champion won last year with a 101 Beyer. Also on the card: ** Several first-time starters dot the two $75,000 2-year-old sprints, including North Sky (a half-sister to the Distaff Sprint contender Sky and Sea) and Chris Mars (a half-brother to the Sprint contender Bourbon County). ** Defending champion Congrats and Roses takes on the Princess Elaine Stakes champion, Dear Fay, going 1 1/16 miles in the $60,000 Distaff Classic. ** Another defending champion, Coconino Slim, faces multiple stakes winner Tubby Time and the sharp open allowance winner Sheer Trick.
