Scottish Lassie preps for Breeders' Cup Distaff at Belmont

ELMONT, N.Y. – The two-time Grade 1 winner Scottish Lassie, runner-up to Fully Subscribed in both the Grade 1 Personal Ensign and Grade 2 Shuvee this summer at Saratoga, has moved from Saratoga to Belmont Park to prepare for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

On Friday, Scottish Lassie worked a half-mile in 48.83 seconds over the Belmont Park main track, going in splits of 24.55 seconds and 24. 28 while galloping out five furlongs in 1:01.82.

“She had a really nice breeze this morning, nice and smooth gallop-out, I’m very happy with her,” trainer Jorge Abreu said.

Scottish Lassie, who was scratched from last year’s BC Distaff due a physical issue, had a chip removed from an ankle in between her 3- and 4-year-old seasons. She returned with a solid allowance win before getting beat a half-length by Fully Subscribed in the Shuvee.

Fully Subscribed beat Scottish Lassie much more decisively in the Personal Ensign, defeating her by 9 1/2 lengths.

“Fully Subscribed was much the best, but my filly was a little bit tired from the previous race,” Abreu said. “But she’s training pretty well. She looks good. I’m going to keep pointing to the Breeders’ Cup.”

Scottish Lassie, who won the Grade 1 Frizette as a 2-year-old at Aqueduct, finished fourth in the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Scottish Lassie also won the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks as a 3-year-old.
