Both mares are cataloged to sell at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale, which begins on Monday, Nov. 2, less than 48 hours after the Breeders’ Cup is contested for the first time at the Lexington, Ky., track. The proximity of the event adds an extra layer of intrigue to the Keeneland November sale and the single-session Fasig-Tipton Kentucky selected fall mixed sale on Nov. 1, both of which traditionally get major catalog updates from the Breeders’ Cup.

While the high-dollar racing and broodmare prospects will take center stage during Kentucky’s November mixed sales, it is also a crucial time for the farms whose stallions will send their first weanlings through the sales ring.

For the first time in its 32-year history, the Breeders’ Cup will be held at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., on Oct. 30-31. On the following day, Nov. 1, Fasig-Tipton Kentucky will hold its annual selected fall mixed sale. On Nov. 2, Keeneland will kick off its 12-day November sale with the first of two select sessions. This year will mark the ninth time that the Breeders’ Cup has been held at a Kentucky track, with Churchill Downs, 90 miles way on Interstate 64 from Lexington, having hosted the event eight times previously. With the possible exception of the Kentucky Derby, the Breeders’ Cup is the biggest event on the racing calendar and inevitably attracts the owners and connections of the 100 or so runners in the Breeders’ Cup races. Those owners are, logically, potential buyers at the November breeding stock sales.
The number of horses cataloged for the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale reached an all-time high during its 2015 renewal, but the sale could not maintain the record pace it had set over the past four editions, posting mild declines from the previous year.
While still on pace to be one of the strongest renewals in the auction’s history, Wednesday’s session of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale continued the trend of finishing behind last year’s comparable sessions in both gross and average returns.
The second day of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale showed an increase activity from the opening session, especially at the top of the market, but figures still trended behind last year’s record-setting sale.
