The bar is set high for those looking to beat the favorite in Saturday’s $175,000 Monomoy Girl Overnight Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Churchill Downs. Grade 1 winner Percy’s Bar is by far the most accomplished in the seven-horse field as she looks to hit the reset button for the second half of her season following a seventh-place finish in the May 1 Kentucky Oaks. Percy’s Bar, winner of the Debutante sprinting at Churchill Downs last year, showed she was of Grade 1 quality during the remainder of her 2-year-old season. She finished second in the Spinaway, then crossed the line first in the Alcibiades before being demoted to second for bumping distant runner-up Tommy Jo earlier in the stretch. In the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, Percy’s Bar was attempting to advance from farther back than usual when she was pinballed off the rail near the three-sixteenths pole and rebounded to finish willingly for third. Off more than a five-month layoff, owing to a harsh winter in Kentucky, Percy’s Bar reemerged to win the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes by 2 1/4 lengths after bursting through with an adroit rail move. In the Kentucky Oaks, Percy’s Bar broke well but never got into the top group and never seemed to get into a rhythm while wide. She ultimately finished seventh, beaten eight lengths. “The Oaks was disappointing because we know she’s better than that,” regular rider Luan Machado told Churchill this week. “She didn’t have quite enough early kick to stay with the first group of horses, and we ended up a little wide around both turns. It just wasn’t the trip we were hoping for.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Trainer Ben Colebrook has since opined that he didn’t feel Percy’s Bar was happy running under the lights, with the Oaks contested in prime time this year. Percy’s Bar should be racing in sunlight Saturday afternoon and shouldn’t find too much trouble under Machado, who will have options on the versatile filly, who can stalk and pounce or take initiative on the lead. Knickleandime, stakes-placed at Oaklawn earlier this year but well beaten in her two most recent stakes tries, should show speed from the rail. Point of Reference, stepping up in class off back-to-back wins, could press her. Sneaky Good could add to the pace. She was second by three-quarters of a length in the Grade 2 Beaumont last out, and trainer Brad Cox said afterward that he was surprised she was not closer to the pace. Sneaky Good is cross-entered in Saturday’s Grade 3 Delaware Oaks at this same 1 1/16 miles. On Thursday, Cox said he was learning toward running in Delaware. In either spot, the consistent filly could be a factor, as her lone try around two turns was “sneaky good.” She was third in the Grade 3 Honeybee to Explora and Counting Stars – both of whom ran creditably in the Kentucky Oaks and emerged for next-out stakes wins, Counting Stars in the Grade 1 Acorn. A. P.’s Girl, who took six tries to win a maiden race but who has steadily improved since, would likely appreciate some targets in front of her. The filly was most recently a solid third in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan at Laurel. Holly’s Holiday won the Valley of the Vapors at Oaklawn but was sixth in the Black-Eyed Susan last out. Debut winner La Rascasse, stretching out to two turns, completes the field. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
