The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. spring 2-year-olds in training sale entered off an all-time great performance in 2017, and managed to top it in 2018, with across-the-board gains led by a $1.1-million Medaglia d’Oro filly. The four-day auction closed on Friday with 707 juveniles sold for revenues of $69,429,500, bettering last year’s record gross of $60,935,900 from 678 sold by 14 percent. Also setting a new high-water mark was the average sale price, which grew 9 percent to $98,203 from $89,876. The median closed at a record high for the seventh consecutive year, rising 16 percent to $55,000 from $47,500. The buyback rate finished at 18 percent, compared with 17 percent during the 2017 sale. Making this year’s results especially impressive was the fact that the first and only seven-figure horse of the sale came near the end of Friday’s fourth and final session, after three horses crossed that threshold during last year’s edition. The number of purchases at the $500,000 price point or higher rose to 14 from 12, while horses sold for $250,000 or more grew to 66 from 60. Total six-figure purchases increased to 216 from 171. :: Get breeding & sales news, Beyer info, and more delivered right to your email! Bloodstock agent Steven Young landed the winning bid on the sale-topper, a $1.1-million filly by Medaglia d’Oro. The bay filly is out of the placed Carson City mare Wilshewed, whose seven winners from nine foals to race include Grade 1 winner Stormello, Grade 2 winner My Best Brother, Grade 3 winner Gala Award, Grade 1-placed Cherry Lodge, and Grade 3-placed Greatest Game. Wilshewed is also the dam of stakes producers Atlantic Voyage and Ever So Pretty. Bred in Kentucky by the estate of William L. Currin, the filly is from the family of Australian Group 2 winner All Bar One, U.S. Grade 3 winner The Pamplemousse, and Japanese Group 3 winner Reserve Your Heart. The filly breezed an eighth of a mile in 9 4/5 seconds to tie for the fastest effort at the distance during the pre-sale under-tack show, which was held over the Ocala Training Center's all-weather Safetrack surface. Randy Bradshaw consigned the filly, as agent. She was a $300,000 purchase at last year's Keeneland September yearling sale. The filly that sold Friday was the second seven-figure auction graduate out of Wilshewed, following the Bernardini colt Gala Award, who sold to the Coolmore partnership for $1.55 million at the 2012 Keeneland September yearling sale. Niall Brennan Stables finished as the auction’s leading consignor by gross, with 28 horses sold for a combined $6,052,000. His consignment accounted for two of the sale’s top five prices, led by a Tapit colt who sold to Robert and Lawana Low for $750,000. Young was the sale’s top buyer, with seven purchases totaling $2,605,000. Friday’s closing session produced the highest average and median sale prices of this year’s sale, propelled by the seven-figure sale-topper. A total of 161 horses sold on Friday for $17,230,500, up 31 percent from last year’s closing-session gross of $13,142,200. The average sale price grew 17 percent to $107,022 from $91,265, while the median rose 12 percent to $57,000 from $51,000. Randy Miles was Friday’s top consignor by gross, with 10 horses sold for $1,756,000, led by a Munnings colt who sold to Ed and Susie Orr for $700,000. Young was also the session’s leading buyer, with two purchases totaling $1,250,000. To view the full results from Friday’s session, click here.
