The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. spring 2-year-olds in training sale steamrolled last year’s record pace as the auction hit its halfway point on Wednesday, posting across-the-board gains led by a $750,000 Tapit colt. After two days of trade, a total of 345 juveniles changed hands for revenues of $34,639,500, up 16 percent from the two-day mark of last year’s sale, when 352 horses sold for $29,787,200. The average sale price was up 19 percent to $100,404 from $84,623, while the median rose 22 percent to $55,000 from $45,000. Last year’s OBS spring sale finished with all-time high marks in gross, average, and median. While two days of selling still remain, the midpoint returns outpacing the history-making performance of 2017 indicate the marketplace remains extremely bullish for upper- and mid-level offerings at the sale. A total of 180 horses sold on Wednesday for $18,932,500, up 34 percent from last year’s second session, when 167 juveniles brought $14,111,500. The average sale price rose 24 percent to $105,181 from $84,500, while the median grew 40 percent to $56,000 from $40,000. Wednesday’s buyback rate finished at 22 percent, compared with 21 percent during last year’s comparable session. Six horses sold for $500,000 or more on Wednesday, one better than the same session in 2017. The number of transactions at the $250,000 price point and above rose to 18 from 14, while six-figure sales grew to 64 from 39. :: Get breeding & sales news, Beyer info, and more delivered right to your email! Robert and Lawana Low are in the midst of a big month, as they campaign the undefeated Magnum Moon from a win in the Arkansas Derby to his biggest test yet in the Kentucky Derby. They bridged the gap on Wednesday by landing the session-topper, a $750,000 colt by perennial leading commercial sire Tapit. The gray or roan colt is out of the Grade 3-placed stakes winning Touch Gold mare Flaming Heart, whose six foals to race are all winners, including the Grade 2 winner Commissioner and Grade 3 winner Laugh Track. She is also the dam of Mythical Bride, who herself produced Grade 2 winner and Kentucky Derby hopeful Vino Rosso. Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm and Winchell Thorouhbreds, the colt is from the extended family of Grade 3-placed Dash for Money and stakes winners Hot Lear, Intern, Love Medicine, So Lonesome, and No Spin. The colt breezed an eighth of a mile in 10 2/5 seconds during the pre-sale under-tack show, over the Ocala Training Center's all-weather Safetrack surface. Niall Brennan Stables consigned the colt, as agent. Wednesday's transaction made the colt the most expensive foal out of Flaming Heart to sell at public auction, surpassing the Tiznow colt Saint X., who brought $450,000 at the 2011 Keeneland Septebmer yearling sale. WinStar Farm bought Flaming Heart, in foal to Street Cry, for $1.5 million at the 2007 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. The Lows were Wednesday’s leading buyers by gross based on the lone purchase of the session-topper. Brennan was the day’s leading consignor, with nine horses sold for a combined $2,607,000. The OBS spring sale continues through Friday, with sessions beginning at 10:30 a.m. Eastern. To view the full results from Wednesday’s session, click here.
