LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Grade 3, $150,000 Regret was the last of five graded stakes for Thoroughbreds Saturday evening on Stephen Foster night at Churchill Downs, but the race itself was about firsts. A victory from Hard Legacy gave the 3-year-old filly her first career stakes win, as it did her young trainer, Norm Casse. She gave him a thrill from start to finish. Eager past the stands for the first time in the two-turn Regret, she settled down the backstretch with a half-mile in 48.06 seconds and three-quarters in 1:12.94, leaving her with enough left to turn away a bid from Winter Sunset down the stretch. After the latter cut her lead down to a half-length at the eighth pole, she pulled clear from that rival late, scoring by 1 1/4 lengths. A daughter of Hard Spun owned by Marylou Whitney, she raced 1 1/8 miles under Julien Leparoux on a firm turf course in 1:48.22. She paid $13.80. Casse, who bases his stable at Churchill Downs and went to school in Louisville at Bellarmine University, called the win “poetic” that it came locally and with a jockey and owner with whom he has friendships. Son of Sovereign Award-winning Mark Casse, he began his training career last year. “I’m happy and proud,” he said. “I was thinking all day that it was probably going to be the time. It’s Churchill Downs. It’s Julien. It’s Marylou.” In addition to the winner, Casse trained the fourth-place finisher, Belle Laura. The latter was beaten 4 1/2 lengths, following Winter Sunset and favored Varenka in second and third, respectively. Rb Texas Hold Em wins UAE Cup Closing out the Saturday night stakes action at Churchill was the Grade 1, $100,000 UAE Cup for Arabians, a race won decisively by Rb Texas Hold Em ($17.80). Drifting in and out under pressure from jockey Gabe Saez, he raced 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:56.45. Nicole Ruggeri trains Rb Texas Hold Em, a 4-year-old son of T M Fred Texas owned by Ryerley Racing. Mizzdora ran second and Mad Jikman was third.
