Mount Doom will attempt to win his fourth stakes race in a 10-week span when he goes off a heavy favorite in Saturday’s $50,000 Glen Todd Ascot Graduation over 1 1/16 miles at Hastings. Sharing top billing on the card is the $50,000 Glen Todd Fantasy Stakes over the same distance, where Someday Lady will try to solidify herself at the head of the class of the local juvenile fillies. Most racing seasons at Hastings wind down with 2-year-olds making their first route attempts in the two stakes. The usual scenario is that either division or both have been dominated by one runner. Invariably that horse is a heavy favorite while attempting the unknown of an extra turn against other, perhaps more slow to develop, youngsters. This October is no different, but from a British Columbia foal crop of just 78 in 2022, each of Saturday’s unrestricted stakes drew just five entrants, all BC-breds. Trainer Cindy Krasner will saddle recent Sadie Diamond Futurity winner Someday Lady in the Fantasy. Her filly comes into the race with a major Beyer Speed Figure edge over her foes, having reached 50 on the Beyer scale in consecutive starts. No one else in the field has reached 36. “As for the distance, I don’t believe it will be an issue,” Krasner said. “All her works have been very good and the gallop-outs have been strong.” Someday Lady is a daughter of Cairo Prince, who won the Grade 2 Holy Bull over 1 1/16 miles in January of his 3-year-old season. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Lining up to oppose the favorite are Sailing Force, trained by Patty Leaney; Another Last Dance, trained by Erick Gutierrez; and a pair trained by Pat Jarvis – Anstruther and Zenari. Sailing Force and Zenari have yet to win a race, while the other two each won a maiden race in September. Mount Doom, trained by Steve Henson, enters the Ascot Graduation on a three-race win streak and will be facing four maidens he has defeated before. The opposition includes stablemate Who Is, a runner who debuted in last month’s Jack Diamond Futurity and finished fifth, beaten 14 1/4 lengths by Mount Doom. The others in the lineup are Chick Command, trained by Ian Jewell; Counter Cat, trained by Keith Pedersen; and Kris’s Gold, trained by Patty Leaney. Pedigree-wise, Mount Doom is not a slam dunk to take to the added distance. Sire Bakken never raced beyond seven furlongs and was pretty speedy. His dam, A Song for Arbonne, won a maiden race over 1 1/16 miles on the synthetic surface at Woodbine in her final career start. Mount Doom’s second dam, General Jeanne, did manage to win twice at one mile around two turns. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
