ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Jockey Adam Beschizza teamed with trainer Kelsey Danner as both won their first Woodbine race with Kentucky invader Mohawk Trail in Sunday’s $100,000 Alywow Stakes.
In her first non-Tapeta start, favored Ryder Ryder Ryder tracked pacesetter Collecting Flatter through slow splits in the 6 1/2-furlong turf sprint for 3-year-old fillies.
Mohawk Trail ($23.10) stalked the leaders between rivals through the turn and then split horses in the stretch en route to a three-quarter-length score, in a time of 1:15.65 over the firm ground.
Saratoga-based Up and Down edged out Last Call for second, as Ryder Ryder Ryder weakened to fourth. Secret Money, Fearless Angel, and Collecting Flatter completed the order of finish.
“She was doing everything a lot more forward than I anticipated,” Beschizza said. “She broke right on top of the gate and was almost vying for the lead for the first furlong. Kelsey had her perfect for today. She’s done a great job with her. She was in perfect condition coming into this race. She was almost too ready. She was there very early from the beginning and was almost there too soon. The last eighth of a mile, she was almost easing up, waiting for company.”
A daughter of the late Pioneerof the Nile, Mohawk Trail earned $60,000 in her first stakes victory for NBS Stable.
