Manitoba Derby victor Mano Dura will look to continue his winning ways going 1 1/4 miles against a deep field in the second leg of the Western Canadian Triple Crown on Saturday in the Grade 3, $200,000 Canadian Derby at Century Mile in Edmonton, Alberta. The series concludes with the Grade 3 British Columbia Derby on Sept. 16 at Hastings. There’s a $100,000 bonus in waiting if Mano Dura sweeps the three prestigious races for 3-year-olds. In addition, the Canadian Derby winner gets a paid entry into the Grade 3 Ontario Derby on Oct. 21 at Woodbine. A $50,000 claim by owner Henry Witt Jr. and trainer Jerry Gourneau at Lone Star Park in June, Mano Dura won an allowance at Assiniboia in July. The son of Keen Ice doubled up in the 1 1/8-mile Manitoba Derby, during which he had a lovely inside trip before running down Heroic Move in the stretch en route to a 4 1/4-length score with an 85 Beyer Speed Figure. Among the others entered in the 12-horse field are unbeaten British Columbia invader Sunbird; American shippers Abeliefinthislivin and Chase the Chaos; and Heroic Move. Two longshots are stuck on the also-eligible list. A front-runner trained by Terry Jordan, Sunbird is 3 for 3 at Hastings, where he took the Sir Winston Churchill Derby Trial on Aug. 7. He won a six-furlong allowance/optional claimer in his July 8 season opener at Century Mile and should lead the way along the inside. :: Bet with the Best!
