Lethal Cowboy 123 ends skid in Vessels Maturity
Lethal Cowboy 123 ended a four-race losing streak with an important victory as a heavy favorite in Sunday’s $142,900 Vessels Maturity for older Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos.
Ridden by Edwin Escobedo, Lethal Cowboy 123 broke well from the outside post and was never troubled by seven rivals, winning the 400-yard race by three-quarters of a length in 19.68 seconds.
Cattail Cove, a 9-year-old gelding, finished second at 8-1 in his 62nd start. Cattail Cove finished three-quarters of a length in front of 8-1 Show N Tell Cartel.
Scoops Dynasty, the 9-2 second choice and an eight-time stakes winner, lost all chance when he stumbled badly at the start. Scoops Dynasty was unable to recover and finished last.
The victory gave Lethal Cowboy 123 a berth to the $700,000 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos on Dec. 12, the sport’s leading race for older horses.
Lethal Cowboy 123 ($3) won for the 11th time in his 18th start in the Vessels Maturity, the track’s leading summertime race for older horses.
Earlier this year, Lethal Cowboy 123 was second by a nose in the $135,500 Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship. Lethal Cowboy 123 was beaten in two starts at Remington Park in May, a second in the $105,280 Leo Stakes and an eighth-place finish in a field of 12 in the $250,000 Debbie Schauf Remington Park Championship on May 30.
Trained by Marc Jungers for the partnership of Caliche Walls Venture, Alan Isbell, Lance Bland and Jimmy Barton, Lethal Cowboy 123 has earned $1,530,997. A 4-year-old gelding, Lethal Cowboy is best known for a win in the $1.8 million Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity in December 2024.
The victory clinched the titles of champion 2-year-old gelding and overall champion 2-year-old Quarter Horse of 2024 for Lethal Cowboy 123.
