With the Grade 3 Sanford positioned as the third race Saturday at Saratoga, here is a look at the early pick five and a proposed ticket. Race 1 ($16,000 Claiming): The presence of at least several speed horses in the day’s opener sets the race up favorably for stalkers Warm (9) and She's Not Bluffing (10), drawn on the outside in this seven-furlong dirt contest. They ought to receive good trips and fit off recent form regardless. Warm rates on top based on class, having won a maiden special weight on dirt at Tampa before remaining competitive at times in allowance company, while She's Not Bluffing offers appeal after a career-best effort in dusting maiden $25,000 stock in her latest. Race 2: (Maiden $40,000 Claiming): Best to spread in the second race, a turf sprint, using Prisoner's Dilemma (2), Linda's Ballet (5), Mike's Girl (3), Vitanza (8), and Crater Rim (11).  Prisoner’s Dilemma is narrowly preferred, being a lightly raced maiden special weight dropper, but the others do not appear far behind. Linda’s Ballet and Mike’s Girl are the next most logical winners, while Vitanza and Crater Rim offer price appeal at their morning-line odds of 10-1 and 15-1, respectively. :: Get PPs, Clocker Reports, picks, and more from DRF's Saratoga One-Stop Shop Race 3 (Sanford Stakes): A two-deep strategy follows in what seems a below-average renewal of the Grade 3 Sanford for 2-year-olds at six furlongs. Here, the choices are Cucina (3) and By Your Side (5), both determined maiden winners in their last starts. Cucina is the faster of the two in terms of last-race numbers, posting a 75 Beyer Speed Figure by catching Hai Bobby, a loose-on-the-lead rival, when making his second start in a June 21 maiden race in the slop. By Your Side, meanwhile, was a debut winner by a nose at Churchill on June 14, and the form from that that race was validated when third-place finisher Verb was third against winners in the Grade 3 Bashford Manor. Race 4 (Maiden Special Weight): More 2-year-olds follow in the fourth race, this time maidens going 5 1/2 furlongs on the main track. Here, Zyramid (6) holds an advantage, having raced once at Churchill Downs, where he was third after contesting the pace. He ought to benefit from that start and show more staying power, but if he does not, then first-timer High Tide (1) could be the one to have his picture taken. He has been training swiftly for trainer Todd Pletcher, though he breaks from the fence, a position that can sometimes be intimidating for an inexperienced horse. Race 5 (Allowance): Last up in the sequence is a 5 1/2-furlong allowance race for entry-level types, a race in which the stakes-placed Originator (1) is expected to return ready following a layoff going back to September. Trainers don’t like to “give races” to comebackers at prestigious, short meets like Saratoga, and judging from the worktab posted by Originator, trainer Ian Wilkes has her ready to go. Still, let’s also back her up with Paper Clip (2), a fast maiden winner at Churchill Downs whose other grass try was a sneaky-good third-place finish behind an eventual stakes winner in Boxwood at Kentucky Downs last fall. The Ticket: A 50-cent early Pick 5 using the horses outlined in this analysis – 9,10 with 2,3,5,8,11 with 3,5 with 1,6 with 1,2 – costs $40.
